Actually there is no such number i stick to tbh. I simply add links where they actually matters to the reader and make sure that this new article has backlinks to the core pages which i want to promotes.

i usually add internal links where they make sense for the reader and help connect related topics for me relevance is more important than hitting a specific number

One thing that worked for me was building small topic clusters. I connect related articles together instead of linking randomly across the site.

Your question is wrong from the base, internal links depends on many factors like total words and content structure. Adding many links can reduce your luck to rank if it looks spammy
But on average you can do 2-4 for every 1000 words. If it's a new site, it's better to start with the lowest amount and update your article after growing a little bit (add one or two more)

I think relevance matters more than hitting a certain number If the link helps the reader I'd add it
Relevance and strong link matters more than the number of link which will give minimum results.meanwhile if you focus on relevance and link quality there shouldn't be a problem coming..........
