Pretty common though.. You get an initial lift from residual signals, then it plateaus once that fades.

I usually check on backlink decay/quality, anchor profile, past usage (Wayback), topical alignment, and indexation. If all looks clean, it just needs fresh authority links + consistent content to push it further.

I would first check the backlink profile, indexing, and content quality. Also review lost backlinks, technical issues, and search intent. Sometimes expired domains need fresh authority and regular content updates again.
 
I actually went through something similar earlier this year. I had an old domain I'd been renewing for a long time, but hadn't built a site on it yet. I created a website around a niche topic. It performed really well at first, but then I started dropping in the rankings. I think this suggests Google intentionally pushes it up early on to "test" the domain. I believe the rankings will climb back up over time.
 
use ahrefs to check which backlinks are considered "spam" (by ahrefs), check them manually and if they are really spammy, remove them using google disavow feature.

Google say they ignore spam backlinks but this is not true, had projects dying because of new scheme of backlink promotions... They now just add any new domain to their network of domains (free :D) and google really reacts negatively to this, I have had seen it myself...

imho the honey moon effect may eventually disappears . imho i would see whether the existing links are working and relevant or create the new content rather than use an already expired domain name.

Yes i have seen this happen quite a few times. An expired domain can give you an initial boost, but once that inherited authority settles, Google starts evaluating the sites current quality, not just its history.

so here i would check whether the new content matches the domain's previous topical relevance, review the backlink profile for lost or toxic links, inspect indexing and crawl health, and compare your content against the current top ranking pages.

If the inherited authority isn’t supported by relevant, quality content and a healthy link profile, the initial boost can fade over time.

Ysss i knew about that kind of thing happening with the expired sites. first i would check the existing backlink profile and if the new content really does fits with what the site used to be about.
