Lately I’ve been having this debate with a few client teams during budget planning. However, DR70+ placements come with a much higher price tag, and trying to build them at scale will burn through your budget fast.

On the flip side, DR30s are cheap and easy to scale, but you often need a bucketload of them to move the needle on anything mid-to-high competition.

In my experience, DR40–50 links with actual organic traffic and tight topical relevance usually hit the absolute sweet spot for ranking impact versus dollar spent.

Curious how you guys are splitting your link budget these days—are you still paying the heavy premium for DR70+, or leaning into mid-tier DR sites that actually match your niche?

focus on niche related links.

only if the link is super high authoritive (wikipedia, forbes, magazines, newspapers, etc.) it can have a huge impact.

if its a regular site a DR 40 link in the exact same niche as your money site can be way more beneficial than a DR 70 link from a unrelated niche.

Some high DR sites are expensive but do not send any value. I always check the website first before looking at the DR number.
However, clients don't always get that, and convincing them can be pretty tough. So I always make sure to have full reports and comparison metrics ready for them to see!

Spot on. Raw DR is just an arbitrary third-party metric anyway. I’ve seen DR70 sites bleeding organic traffic that do absolute zero for rankings compared to a clean, active DR40 niche blog. My rule of thumb these days is simple: use high-DR links sparingly to the homepage just for foundational trust, but throw the bulk of the budget into DR40–50 niche-relevant sites with real traffic pointing directly to money pages.

this is good but for me i usually spread my budget across quality, niche-relevant placements than put too much into a handful of expensive links.

I totally agree with this since Google is very smart nowadays and it can perceive whether if your backlinks are relevant to your websites/blogs or not.

Completely on the same page with you here. That DR 40 to 50 range with actual organic traffic and strict relevance is honestly the best value out there right now.

Paying that premium for DR 70 and above just drains the budget way too fast, and the return rarely justifies the cost when you're trying to scale. We've pretty much shifted away from chasing those massive authority links unless there's a huge budget in play to back it up.

Right now we're putting about 80% of our budget into highly relevant DR 40 to 60 sites that actually rank for our target topics. The other 20% goes toward a handful of top level placements, just to keep the link profile diverse and natural looking.

As long as those mid level domains have real traffic and match the niche perfectly, they honestly move the needle way faster than people expect. You're definitely playing it smart focusing your strategy there.

I agre, DR alone can be misleading. I have seen smaller niche site with real trafic outperform bigger DR site becuz the relevance nd link placement were much stronger.

I think the best ROI comes from a mix. A few strong authority links are nice, but most of my budget goes to relevant sites with decent traffic.

I agree that chasing high DR alone can be misleading. I’ve seen DR30-50 websites with real traffic and strong niche relevance perform better than expensive DR70+ placements. In the end, a link’s actual value matters more than just the DR number.

DR70+ is often overpriced for the impact it gives.

I would focus on mostly budget on DR40–60 sites with real traffic and strong rlevance since they move rankings faster. Smaller portion goes to DR20–40 for scale, and only a few DR70+ for authority.

Mostly, relevance and traffic matter more than DR alone.

I agree with your point. That seems like a smart move. But what you should really need is not one time, it needs consistency. Consistency is the only thing that delivers the desired result. In my practice, it takes 3-5 months to push a site with a DR 40+ with traffic and proper topical authority, it does not happen at once. That’s what I’d like to point out here.

I prefer investing in DR40–50 sites with real organic traffic and strong niche relevance. They usually provide the best balance between cost and ranking performance, while I reserve DR70+ placements for key pages only

I think DR alone is not the main factor. A relevant DR40-50 site with real traffic can be more valuable than a random DR70 link.

Yes, I mostly agree with that. I'd take a relevant DR40–50 website with real traffic. We've seen much better ROI by focusing on relevance, editorial quality, and genuine traffic sites.

One thing I'd add is that it also depends on the stage of the website. For newer sites, we've had good success building a solid foundation with mid tier editorial links and brand mentions first. Then, we add a few high authority placements where they make sense. This has been much more cost effective than spending most of the budget on a DR70+ links.
