I've seen a lot of creators talk about this. From what I've noticed, Shorts don't necessarily hurt long-form videos, but they often attract a different type of viewer. Someone who watches a 20-second Short isn't always interested in a 10-minute video.
That said, Shorts can still be great for growth if they're related to your main content and give people a reason to check out your longer videos. The biggest mistake is treating them as two completely different channels.

The audience is not fully different, short clips of long movies make more views from people who have seen the movie to the end. Short is fast and gets a message across quickly, all of the people wants something quick, It's like saying fast food took over slow food.

you can use that to your advantage, link the long videos to the most interesting part of your short. Or post multiple shorts linking back to the long video, you will get views that way

@TopOneYouTube is spot on about the algorithmic drag. i ran a test last year on a client channel pushing shorts hard, and the average view duration on our 10-minute videos dropped by almost half within six weeks. the subs you get from shorts just don't click long form, and when they do, they leave instantly which kills your reach. honestly if you want to leverage shorts without ruining your main channel's authority, it's better to run them on a separate burner channel and redirect the traffic through pinned links. keeping them on the same channel is just asking to mess up your data.

It is a straight-up audience mismatch. Shorts viewers rarely convert into long-form fans, and pushing long videos to them just kills your initial retention. Yes, i have seen that too. The shorts get a lot more traction, but the viewers who come through shorts do not necessarily watch long form content. imho , it is best if you can make your shorts transition into your longs seamlessly.
