Downsizing 16" M4 Pro (24GB) to 14" M5 (16GB/1TB) for Dev — Have a 27" monitor at home. Good move?

Hey everyone,

I currently have a 16-inch MacBook Pro with the M4 Pro chip and 24GB RAM. While it’s an absolute powerhouse, the 16-inch size is getting way too heavy for daily travel.
I'm considering switching to a 14-inch Base M5 MacBook Pro (16GB RAM / 1TB SSD) purely for portability.

Context on my setup & usage:
- At home, I am docked to a 27-inch external monitor for most of my heavy work.
- When working around the house (e.g., sitting on the couch) or traveling, I just use the laptop as-is.

My daily workflow:
- Android Development (Android Studio + Emulators)
- VS Code
- Claude Code / AI tools

My concerns:
  1. Will dropping from M4 Pro (24GB) to Base M5 (16GB) feel like a significant downgrade when running Android Studio + emulators + VS Code together?
  2. Is 16GB RAM sufficient for this dev workflow, or should I stick to at least 24GB/32GB?
  3. Since I use a 27" monitor at my desk, is 14" the sweet spot for couch work & travel, or will I miss the 16" thermals and screen space?

i will stay with 24 gb ram for dev work. Processor speed is good on m5 but for dev work i will choose ram.

but in your case you need small for travel so m5 is good choice. How much ram you consume on your peak hours.
