How are you handling orphan pages on large websites?

I'm working on a fairly large website, and I've noticed that some pages end up with very few or no internal links after new content is published.

I know crawling tools can find orphan pages, but I'm more interested in the workflow.
  • Do you audit internal links on a schedule or only during content updates?
  • Do you have a target for the minimum number of internal links per page?
  • Have you noticed a measurable improvement in crawling or rankings after fixing orphan pages?
I'd like to hear what has worked for you in real projects.

We audit internal links monthly and after every major content release. I use Screaming Frog (crawl + Analytics/GSC) to identify orphan pages, then add contextual internal links from relevant, high-authority pages rather than just increasing the link count. I don't follow a fixed minimum number of internal links, relevance matters more than quantity. Fixing orphan pages has consistently improved crawl efficiency, indexation, and helped important pages gain visibility faster.

for me i usually check internal links whenever I publish or update content instead of waiting for a full audit

if need means add to internal linking and if not used , can be redirect or removed.

It is not about getting a certain amount of internal links, but rather ensuring that the right page are appropriately linked to improve navigability, while at the same time removing or combining any unnecessary page.

I usually start by running a full site crawl and comparing it with the list of indexed URLs. Any page that has no internal links gets reviewed to see if it still provides value.
