Content Length in 2026 - Does Word Count Still Matter or Is It All About Intent?

In my experience word count alone does not determine rankings. Pages that satisfy search intent.... cover the topic well, and provide real value consistently perform longer. If your content is short but answers the user's question and provides useful information the content will rank.

@Nikolaos agreed, and that's the bit I framed badly in the OP. I set it up as length versus intent when the real question is just whether the page finishes the job. Do you find the long ones still earn their length on comparison queries, or does the same thing hold there?

I've been questioning everything I thought I knew about SEO content, specifically around content length and word count. I want to challenge some assumptions and get your real-world experiences.
i believe that many individuals were caught up in reachhing word count rather than considering the real objective of the material. from what i have observed the most successful articles r those that really address the readers question without any additional padding. Some topics requiire some depth but there r others that do not.

@vexopiper that last part is where it actually gets hard. Working out which topics need the depth is the real skill, and I don't think the keyword on its own tells you.

I go off what's already ranking for it. If page one is all long comparison pieces, that's the format the query wants. If they're short and direct, writing two thousand words just buries the answer.

Does that hold on your side, or do you judge it off the topic itself?

In seo number of characters in making read content are not mandatory to live quality content with low/high character but readable content which explain/expose topic of discussion with easier interpret.
