What black hat seo strategy lost its power over time?

The main thing of blackhatseo was PBN but overtime google figured it out really well and took that power away

Automated link blasts are an example of a technique which did not become instantly obsolete but un predictable. Previously, the advantage lay mainly in sheer no and speed of execution, but now the identical footprint will simply be ignored and face no consequeinces. This makes it difficult to test the techniques since you might be wasting effort making links that work but deliver little or no value.

the biggest one is mass spam link building. Years ago, blasting thousands of forum profiles, blog comments, and directory submissions could move rankings surprisingly fast. Today, most of those links are ignored or carry very little value.

One strategy that has become increasingly less important is making many very similar pages for slight variations on keywords. While this used to be quite successfull in attracting traffic, now it is likely to have the effect of the pages competing against each other or being completely dis regarded. For me, consolidiating the overlapping material into a single page has worked out much better.

Link wheels were a tactic for boosting rankings with webs of interconnected sites. Back then it was easier to get away with it, but modern search engines do a lot more checking, and they notice artificial link patterns. These days, ranking strength leans more on relevance and content quality, plus genuine, earned backlinks rather than big, large-scale link wheel schemes.

Keyword stuffing is the biggest example. It used to help, but now search engines prioritize natural, helpful content. Low-quality link farms are another tactic that's lost most of its value and can even lead to penalties.

I believe that the main imp thing is that although some black hat practices did not dis appear, they only becames more difficult to implement on a large scale. This is bcz the old practice of leaving the same footprint in all cases was exposed, since search engines became able to spot patterns as opposed to separate occuerrences. It is now about making your choice carefully and calculating risks.

The "dies quietly vs gets named in policy" split is a really good way to frame the risk, and it matches what I've seen. I'd throw in a third bucket though: stuff that never fully dies, it just shrinks to a niche. Exact match domains are the obvious one. They didn't stop working after the EMD update, they just went from a huge lever to a minor one, so anyone who kept betting the whole strategy on them slowly bled out with no single dramatic drop to warn them. That's the trap with the slow fade tactics - they rarely give you a clean signal to quit, so it's worth checking now and then whether a thing is actually still moving rankings or you're just doing it out of habit.
