Do Hidden Backlinks Still Help with SEO in 2026?

Hey BHW Members,

I've been working on a few websites and keep seeing mixed opinions about hidden backlinks some people say they still help with rankings while others say they dont make much difference anymore

Has anyone tested them recently? i am only interested in real experiences. Did you notice any impact on SEO or SERPs?
All types of links work

I haven't seen strong evidence that hidden backlinks consistently improve rankings. If they have any effect, it's usually small compared to getting relevant contextual links from quality sites.
My focus is on strategies that are more reliable over the long term.

From what I've seen, hidden backlinks aren't something I'd rely on. Any short-term gains tend to be inconsistent, while the long-term risk isn't worth it.

From what I've seen, hidden backlinks haven't given consistent results. In a few tests they had little to no lasting impact, and I'd rather focus on earning relevant, visible links that continue to help rankings over time instead of relying on tactics that search engines may ignore or penalize.

I am curious about this as well there are so many different opinions out there so I'd really like to hear from someone who is tested it recently real experiences are much more valuable than assumptions

In my personal experience, hidden backlinks are not a strategy that can be used to achieve SEO success in the long run.

The results are often inconsistent and risky. Contextual and relevant backlinks from high-quality websites are much better for ranking.

Did you test hidden backlinks versus editorial backlinks on the same website to compare how consistent the ranking improvements were in each case?

short lived sites may do but site want maintain long term is not advisable.

In my experience relevance and the overall quality of the backlink matter far more than whether it's hidden.

I haven't seen consistent results from hidden backlinks, and I wouldn't rely on them as part of a long-term strategy. In my experience, links that are placed naturally within relevant content tend to hold up much better over time.

I'd be interested to hear if anyone has run a proper side-by-side test, but personally I'd rather invest the effort in links that provide value to both users and search engines.

I tested hidden backlinks a while ago, and the results were inconsistent. They might give a short-term boost on low-competition keywords, but I haven't seen them produce sustainable rankings. better long-term results with relevant editorial backlinks, strong internal linking, and topical authority.

i haven't seen hidden backlinks provide consistent long-term gains lately If they work at all the results seem short lived while visible relevant links have been much more reliable in my own testing

They're highly risky, if you get caught you get penalized by google, so I'd advise against using them.

Ran a few tests on this last year — hidden links (display:none, off-screen positioning, same-color-as-background, whatever flavor) mostly just get filtered out or trigger a manual action if you get unlucky. Google's cloaking detection is way better than it used to be. Any lift you see is usually just from the anchor/context itself, not the "hidden" part. Not worth the risk on a site you actually care about imo.

There are some mixed opinions from clients, but my most of the clients got results from hidden backlinks. Even few of them ranked No.1 also

I've seen mixed opinions too Id rather trust recent testing than older advice real experiences across different websites are much more useful when trying to understand what still works today
