Whenever I start working on a website, I like to fix the obvious technical issues before touching content or backlinks. Sometimes a small technical problem can hold a site back more than people expect.


For you, what's the first thing you check during a technical SEO audit?


For me, it's usually indexing and crawl issues, but I'm interested to see what others prioritize and why. Any checks you never skip?

The sitemap.xml formation and optimization. Because instructing with few or wrong information is the base for the caos

I check indexability first too, especially accidental noindex tags, robots.txt blocks, incorrect canonicals, and whether the sitemap is being processed properly. There’s no point improving the content or building links if Google is being told not to index the correct pages. After that, I usually check Core Web Vitals and mobile performance.
 
I always check core web vitals and crawl errors first because they directly affect user experience, indexing and rankings. Fixing those early often makes every other SEO improvement more effective.

something else that i never omit is to test page speed nd core web vitals. Websites with good qualiity content nd good backlinks but with slow loading pages have failed to perform well. improvement in page loading speed may not necessarily boost rankings immediately but certainly it impproves user nd crawler experience.
 
I always check indexing & crawlability first because if pages aren't being properly crawled or indexed nothing else content or backlinks will matter
 
Often times, my first check is indexing and crawlability. I check for logs, robots.txt, canonicals, and internal links because many content issues are just signals that need to be addressed.

although I usualy start off by doing indexability tests, internal linking is not something that I ignore at the start. a site can have all the correct technical settings but still be dificult for search engines to locate important pages because of its linking structure.
 
I've only built Shopify sites, so there are always a bunch of issues popping up in Google Search Console.

Bad news if those issues are theme-related (which is usually the case). You are mostly on your own.
 
The first thing I check is whether the important pages are crawlable and indexable. I review robots.txt, noindex tags, canonical tags, XML sitemaps, and Search Console coverage. If Google cannot access or index the correct pages, content improvements and backlinks may have little effect.

The first thing that i normally do is to look at the architeicture of the website, mainly to see how well key pages are linked, and if there are any issues with unneccessary depth. technical issuess often stem from structure more than anything, as google wastes tym trying to get through pages which could be fixed.

I do that in my everyday work too, but in addition to that, I examine the structure of the website at the very start. sometime everything is right technicaly speaking, but there is no correct link between the page.
 
Core Web Vitals and site speed are always my first stop. If the site is slow or users have a poor experience, everything else has a harder time delivering results.
 
One thing that I am always sure to verify is whether essenItial content is visible to the search engine once rendered. i have come across websites where all looks well from the user point of view but the prblem is that essential parts of the website are too reliant on Java Script or load improperly.

Crawl budget and indexation is my first stop too if Google can't properly crawl and index your pages, nothing else matters. After that I always check Core Web Vitals and internal linking structure because those two alone can explain most ranking plateaus.
 
1. Sitemap.xml correct
2. Redirect for e.g. www. to non www
3. Canonicals

I usualy start off by making sure that the website is indexable however I do make sure to run an audit of the website architecture as well. It is meaningle if the website is technically sound but hard to crawl by search engine bots.
