The Biggest difference is the reputation of the linking site, I Prefer earning relevant, Trustworthy backlink's instead of chasing high numbers from low-quality source's.

The main difference is the strength and reputation of the linking site, Relevance also matters a link's from a trusted site in your niche is usually more valuable than one from an unrelated website.
Quality always beats quantity. One strong backlink better more then dozens of weak ones.
