Hi everyone,
There's a lot of discussion around backlinks, but it seems the focus has shifted from quantity to overall quality and relevance.
For those building links in 2026:
What characteristics do you look for before pursuing a backlink?
Has niche relevance become more important than domain metrics?
What trends are you seeing that you think will continue over the next year?
Interested to hear how everyone is approaching link building today.

Relevance is always the first thing I look at. A backlink from a website closely related to your niche is usually far more valuable than a high DR site with no topical connection.

I also look at the site's content quality, real organic traffic, editorial standards, and whether the link fits naturally within the content. Domain metrics are still useful for filtering opportunities, but I wouldn't make decisions based on DR alone.

The biggest trend I'm seeing is a stronger focus on authority and trust. Fewer, high quality editorial links and brand mentions are delivering much better long term results than building links at scale.

domain metrics matter less than whether the page/site looks legit, earns citations naturally, and isn’t part of any link scheme.
