Hi all,
I’m trying to better understand how Pay Per Install works from a buyer’s perspective. I’ve read different opinions and would like to hear from people with real experience.
What are the key things a buyer should evaluate before moving forward, and what are common issues to watch out for? Any high-level insights would be appreciated.

I think install quality and traffic source transparency are key. How do you usually verify installs from a provider?

Geo targeting and install quality are everything , make sure they're not botting installs. Always start with a small test budget, track conversions yourself, and never trust self-reported numbers from the network.

I think buyers often focus on much more than just the install count.

Traffic quality is usually the first thing to evaluate. Two publishers may deliver the same number of installs, but retention, engagement and overall user behavior can be completely different.

Source transparency is also important. Understanding whether the traffic comes from software downloads, gaming, utilities or other channels helps set realistic expectations and avoid surprises later.

Another thing I've learned is that consistency matters more than a strong first impression. Personally, I wouldn't evaluate a source based only on the initial batch of installs. Performance over time tells you much more than a single successful test.

Finally, communication is often underestimated. Publishers who are transparent about their traffic, willing to answer questions and open to a structured testing process are usually much better long-term partners than those who focus only on volume.

One thing nobody mentioned yet... watch out for how they attribute installs. Some networks pad numbers with incentivized traffic or reinstalls from the same device farms. If your retention drops off a cliff day 1 to day 7, thats usually the tell.

Also do your own tracking with a proper mmp, dont rely on their dashboard. Fingerprinting vs sdk attribution can make a big difference in what you actually see.

And yeah start small like others said. I usually run a test with a couple different geos before scaling anything, the same source can be clean in one country and garbage in another.

I agree.
Another thing I'd add is that a test shouldn't be limited to checking install numbers or CPI.
We also compare:
* D1 / D3 / D7 retention;
* unique devices vs. reinstalls;
* GEO quality;
* and whether the source stays consistent after the test.
We've seen cases where the test looked great, but once the volume increased, the traffic quality changed completely.
That's why we always start with a small test and scale gradually only if the quality remains consistent.

Always ask for a small test first and track results with your own analytics because good PPI is about conversions not just getting lots of installs.
Watch out for fake or incentivized installs poor communication and sellers who cant share clear traffic sources or performance data since these often lead to wasted budget.
lastly before buying trafficmust check the quality of installs GEOs device types user activity after install and whether the traffic is real and matches your goals not just the lowest price.
