If I inflate followers will my account be safe? or has instagram started flagging accounts with fake followers, I can't remember if I read it somewhere

I can't confirm whether Instagram flags fake followers, but from what I've observed first hand.
Adding fake followers to your account will actually slow your followers growth.
These are all zombie type of accounts with 9 pictures, following 500+ accounts (those that bought follow from their operators) and little to no followers
They don't generate any activity since they are not operated as a regular Instagram account.
So I can strongly recommend to stay away from adding fake followers.

Buying followers can make the profile look bigger, but it does not usually help with reach or conversions.

I wouldn't risk it. Even if it doesn't trigger an immediate issue, low-quality followers can hurt your engagement rate.

If you go with quality followers that get added gradually and look like real accounts, the risk is very low. It's the cheap bulk bot stuff that triggers Instagram's filters — those often get purged in the next cleanup anyway, so you're paying for numbers that disappear.
Do it slow, keep it looking natural, and pair it with real content so the engagement ratio isn't way off. That's what keeps an account safe.

in my opinion fake followers r actually becoming less beneficial than simply being harmfful. It is true that not getting caught is a major issue, but having an excess of inactive followers makes it more difficult to figure out what ur real following looks liike. In the end actual engagement always matters more than an inflated number.

It is not safe, and also followers are a vanity metric. SMM panels sell bot followers which yes inflate your account but those followers don't interact in any way with your IG hurting it in the long term.

Yes you can, however what could happen is that 20-25% of them will drop off since some times the followers wont "Stick" or die off. However 75% of them are working good

Instagram can definitively see they're fake. If you buy too much you might get shadow banned. But with couple of hundreds your account should be fine.

In my point of view not now, buying or inflating followers usually is not worth it because Instagram is much better at spotting fake engagement now.
Even if your account isnot banned fake followers can hurt your reach since they donot actually interact with your posts.
I would focus on real followers instead because a smaller active audience always performs better than a big fake one.

I think buying followers means nothing just a number, unless you start getting leads from them.
