I recently started working on an expired domain, and the initial results looked promising. But after some time, the rankings started dropping.
Has anyone faced this? What do you usually check when an expired domain suddenly loses momentum?

In case the domain has not been able to retain its existing link value or there is some kind of toxic history associated with the domain or the new content that is not similar to the earlier one, I would first verify that point.
 
I have run into this before. The first things I look at are the backlink profile, whether any valuable links have been lost or devalued, the site's topical relevance, indexing status, and any technical SEO issues. In many cases, improving the content and cleaning up weak signals helps the site regain its momentum.
 
I've seen this happen quite a few times. The first thing I'd check is whether the expired domain was benefiting from leftover signals that slowly faded after Google reprocessed it. I'd also review the backlink profile for lost links, spammy anchors, and whether the old niche actually matches the new content. If the site changed direction too much, Google may simply stop passing the same value. I'd keep building quality content and a few relevant backlinks instead of making major changes too quickly. Sometimes recovery happens once Google fully understands the new site

I would start with the analysis of the domain is history with the use of various tools like wayback, Ahrefs, and google search console. The matter is that expired domain look good according to metric, but have no topical relevancy.
 
That’s right it’s very typical for expired domains. What I would do is examine backlinks quality, lost referral domain, old topicality versus new content relevancy, and the presence of some penalty on the domain

It is easy to have instant succes using expired domain, but first and foremost, it is important to see whether the domain authority matches my new website. the three thing to be considered include the los of link, niche mismatch, nd past spamming activitie.
 
Yes, it is common. I usually check the domain backlink quality , spam history, indexing status, content relevance , and if the earlier backlinks are still live. Expired domains can get an initial boost but long term rankings depend on quality content, technical SEO, and earning new, relevant backlinks.
 
Expired domains often rank fast to old backlinks but drop later if links decay relevance doesn't match or the new setup looks unnatural
