Do LinkedIn Followers Actually Matter Anymore?

The 5k vs 100k framing is almost a false choice - on LinkedIn the follower number barely touches distribution anymore. Reach is driven by early engagement, first-hour comments especially, because the algo pushes your post into the networks of whoever comments. 100k passive followers give it nothing to travel through. 5k who actually comment expand you into their second-degree networks on every post.

Follower count really only does one thing now: mild social proof when someone lands on your profile. That's it. The connection graph and who engages in the first hour is the real asset - the raw number is just a scoreboard.

  1. I'd choose 5,000 highly relevant followers every time. A smaller, engaged audience is far more valuable than a large audience that's not interested in your content. Quality drives conversations, relationships, and business opportunities.
  2. Quality over quantity. I'd rather have 5,000 people who genuinely care about my niche than 100,000 followers who rarely engage. Meaningful connections always win in the long run.
  3. Relevant followers create real discussions and trust. High engagement from the right audience is much more impactful than impressive follower numbers with little interaction.
  4. For me, it's definitely 5,000 relevant followers. LinkedIn is about building relationships, not just collecting followers. The right audience leads to better conversations and better business outcomes.
  5. Follower count may grab attention, but audience quality creates results. I'd rather build a community that's genuinely interested in what I share than chase vanity metrics.

I think the number of followers on LinkedIn is very important for building your profile’s credibility and increasing engagement on your posts.

Your follower count on LinkedIn is still very important for growing your personal brand and expanding your reach on the platform.

Hello

LinkedIn profiles with huge follower numbers but their posts get very little engagement.

At the same time some people with much smaller audiences seem to generate real conversations, leads and opportunities. It makes me wonder if audience quality matters more than audience size.

What would you rather have on LinkedIn: 5,000 highly relevant followers or 100,000 general followers? Curious to hear your thoughts.
Numbers can be missleading sometimes. A smaller audience that genuinely connects with ur ideas can create better discussions nd stronger relationshiips. In the end meaningful engagement matters more than just having a large follower count.

Follower count has become a vanity metric for LinkedIn. It is possible to generate more engagement through having a smaller number of people withhin your network who get your niche than having an extensive list of people you ca not engage with.

Follower count looks good, but engagement is what really matters. I'd choose an active, relevant audience over big numbers.

Follower count can be misleading. I would rather have a community that regularly reads, comments nd contributes to discussions than a large auddience that is mostlly inactive. In the long run consiistent engagement says a lot more than the number displayed on a profile.

I think connections with right people on LinkedIn is more important than followers at least for me

5,000 relevant followers is much better. LinkedIn tests your post on a small group first. If general followers ignore it, your post dies. A niche audience engages fast, boosting your reach.

In LinkedIn, followers are only valuable to the extent that they relate to your objiectives. An audience of even small size but who is familiar with your specific niche can be more productive for you than an extremely large number of inactive followers.

I would choose 5,000 followers who are relevant to me anytime. A smaller following who can engage and convert is way better than having lots of followers but minimal engagementt.

Numbers can look impressive, but engagement is what really counts. I'd rather have people who actually interact with my content.

Linkedin has a special algorithim, once you make a post, it shows that particular advertisment to small group of people from your list and if he see engagement .. clicks and screen time and other enagements than it shows to more people and than more and than more ..

I'd take 5,000 relevant followers every time. A smaller audience that's actually interested in your niche is far more likely to engage, share your content, and turn into leads than a large but disconnected audience. Follower count can look impressive, but engagement and relationships are what really matter.

Definitely 5,000 targeted followers linkedIn is about generating real B2B pipeline from decision makers, while 100k general followers just dilute your algorithm reach with vanity metrics. :)

I believe that followers are still useful in terms of social proof, but the relevancy of the followers is much more important for tangible results. Anytime I would choose 5,000 followers who are relevant to my niche instead of 100,000 irrelevant followers. It is better on LinkedIn to have fewer followers who actively participate in the discussions than a huge number of silent followers.
