My new website is showing a high spam score, and I’m not sure what could be causing it. I checked basic SEO settings, but I want to know what experienced SEOs usually look at first in this situation.
Is it mostly related to backlinks, domain history, or something else?

Spam score is not something I'd panic over by itself, Look for toxic backlink's, Thin pages, and whether the domain has any history of spam or Penalties.

Backlink's are Usually the first thing I review, but I also check the quality of the site's content and internal structure, A Spam score is just one metric, not the Full Picture.

A high spam score is usually linked to poor-quality backlinks or the domain's previous history. It can also be caused by thin content, spammy outbound links, or technical issues. For a new website, the score is often based on SEO tool estimates rather than a Google penalty. Most SEO experts first review the backlink profile and domain history.

first i would check the history of the domain. i have come across many sites that seem to be good looking but have a bad spam score just bcz the history of the domain was not very good. second would look into the referring domains to find any that look suspiciously bad quality. the spam scores from third parties can be mislleading.

yea domain history is the first thing i check too, specially since we buy aged/expired domains regularly for client projects. i run it through wayback machine first to see wat it was used for before, then check majestic/ahrefs historical backlink data not just current, spammy history often shows up there even if current profile looks clean now. also worth checking if domain was ever used for pbn or got deindexed before, some spam score tools flag domains just for having a messy js/expired history even if nothing wrong today

I would treat a third-party spam score as a screening signal, not a diagnosis. First check whether the domain has a real historical identity: archived pages, past language and topic, ownership changes, and whether it was used for redirects or doorway pages. Then review the actual referring domains for obvious link-network patterns, irrelevant foreign-language anchors, sitewide links, and sharp spikes in acquisition.

Also check the current technical state before building on it: indexation with a site: query, Search Console manual actions/security issues if you have access, and whether the important URLs return clean 200 responses with sensible canonicals. If the problematic links are clearly legacy and cannot be removed, document them, avoid redirecting the domain into an unrelated site, and build a small set of useful pages first. That gives you real performance data before deciding whether disavowal or abandonment is warranted.

The first thing I would check is the domain history. With the help DA DR CHECKER TOOL, And Second thing you need to change with Way backmachine tool your domain history A brand new domain can still have a bad reputation if it was used for spam in the past.

Before the arrival of AI tools, search engines relied on backlinks for everything. So, these 3rd-party metrics like DA, DR, CF, TF, spam score, etc. measure the authority and trust scores of a domain based on its backlink profile. You should review your backlinks and identify the ones causing high spam score. However, keep in mind that these are only 3rd-party metrics and may not influence your Google search rankings.

The first thing you should check is the backlink profile and the domain's history, especially if it's an expired domain. Keep in mind that many spam score tools use their own metrics, so a high score doesn't necessarily mean Google sees the site as spam. you should also check for low quality backlinks, thin content, and any technical issues before worrying too much.

I'd start with the domain's history and backlink profile. If both look clean, then review technical issues and any unnecessary outbound links before assuming the spam score is a real problem.

I'd check the domain's history and backlinks profile first. A high spam score is often caused by toxic links or previous misuse of the domain, not necessarily by your current SEO setup.

a high spam score on a new site is not necessarily anything to worry about. i would first check the history of the domain to see if it had been used for spam in the past nd then look at the backlink profile for any susspicious links. check ur on page setup too. if u have thin content, too many ads or low quality pages sometimes that can play a part. i would focus on quality content nd natural backlinks instead of worrying about the spam score itself.

Hey,
For a new website with high spam score, here’s what experienced people usually check first (in order):
  1. Domain History & AgeThis is the biggest one for new sites. If the domain was previously used (even years ago) and had spam, penalties, or was in PBNs, Google is very quick to flag it. Use tools like Wayback Machine, Archive.org, and DomainTools to check past ownership and history.
  2. Spam Signals on the Site Itself(On-Page)
    • Thin or AI-generated content
    • Exact match anchors or over-optimized internal linking
    • Too many affiliate/commercial keywords in title, H1, meta, etc.
    • Footer links or "site-wide" stuff that looks spammy
    • Duplicate or very similar content
  3. Backlinks (if any)Even if you didn’t build many yet, check if the previous owner had bad backlinks. Toxic links from gambling, adult, pharma, etc. can still hurt.
  4. Technical Stuff
    • Server IP reputation (shared hosting with spammy sites)
    • HTTPS issues or mixed content
    • Aggressive popups, redirects, or cloaking
Pro tip for new sites: Many people buy aged or expired domains with clean history instead of brand new ones. A fresh domain + new site is one of the fastest ways to get high spam score these days.
What tool is showing you the high spam score? (Spamhaus, Moz, SEMrush, etc.?)

First check domain history backlinks most high spam scores come from toxic or previous use links, if that's clean then look at indexed pages & content quality thin, duplicate or auto generated stuff can trigger it

SEOs usually check backlinks first, as spammy links can raise the spam score. They also review the domain’s past history for any previous misuse.
Technical issues like redirects, hacked pages, or duplicate content are common checks.Content quality and trust signals are also important factors. For a new site, backlinks and domain history are usually the first places to look.

I check the domain history first then backlinks. A recycle domain can trigger a high spam score even with a new site.
