Watch time definitely because if people watch your reels they get pushed further.

Retention and shares are by far the most important metrics. If we are talking about ads - hook and hold rate are the most obvious ones for early analysis. If both are good but there are no conversions on your offer - move on to a different content strategy.
retention and shares are what I normally look at first. The views can sometimes be deceiving, but the fact that they are watching through to the end and even sharing the video inidicates that the video has really engaged the viewers. Another thing that I always check is saves.

Comments are the first thing I look at because they tell me the Reel is sparking real conversations.

Watch time and retention are your non-negotiables if you fail to hook the audience instantly, the algorithm nukes your reach and your views become nothing more than vanity metrics. But once your retention is dialed in, shares and saves act as the rocket fuel that pushes your content viral beyond your current follower base. Simply put: retention decides if your video survives, but shares decide how far it scales.
In this case, i consider the difference between reach and the actual engagement with it. It is possible to achieve high reach for a Reel with a short term boost, but in cases when the audience does not watch videos long enough to understand the essence, such reach will be of no value. usually, I consider the initial retention rate to estimiate the success of the concept.

I too often begin with checking out the shares, but I do make sure that I also check out the watch time. When the watch time is high, and people share the Reel among themselves, that is often a good indication of the potential reach of the content.
before jumping for joy after seeing views or likes on videos, I always analyse the visits of the profile from the Reel.
A video might have good retention, but that does not necessarily mean that the visitors are really interested in other videos on my profile.
When viewers watch the video and check the profile afterwards, it usually means that they are interested.
Then, I will take a closer look at follows and saves to determine if the attention translates to any taingible results.

I usually look at watch time first. If people are watching most of the Reel instead of scrolling past, that's usually a good sign the content is engaging. After that, I pay attention to shares and saves because they often indicate that viewers found the content valuable enough to recommend or come back to later. Views are nice, but those engagement signals tend to tell me more about how well the Reel is actually performing.

I usually pay attention to saves first. To me, they're a strong indicator that people found the content valuable enough to come back to later. High view counts are great, but if people are saving the Reel, it often means the content made a lasting impression. After that, I look at comments to see how people are actually responding to it.
First, I always go for the average watch time vs Reel length.
It is much more telling when my 20 second Reel has 15 seconds of avg watch time than when it has 100k views but everybody leaves in 2 seconds.
Next, i try to find out where the sharpest decrease is, since it will tell me exactly what part of the hook or timing should be changed.
Then I go for shares and saves, although retention will say everything about the real content.
The first few seconds are what i verify but what actually catches my attention is the difference between treach of the Reel and the action it does on the profile. If a reel has reached many people but has very few profile views, follows, and people watching other posts, then the content was just interesting to look at.
