Google claims it’s sending 1 billion clicks weekly from AI overviews

So on X I had seen someone from Google had posted they’re sending 1 billion clicks form AI overviews to websites, here’s why it matters

1) it gives website owners a chance to claim a part of traffic lost might not reach original levels but good anyways.

2) most times I see them promoting Reddit, Quora and for some queries I see LinkedIn

I’m yet understanding if regular seo can help or invest heavily in those 3 platforms. This is worth studying I won’t be surprised if later on old seo metrics help to rank in AI overviews but this is a personal opinion I am yet learning more about these but found it fascinating that 1 billion weekly clicks are coming from AI overviews

I think both will matter. Traditional seo is still the foundation because Google needs trusted sources to pull information from, but authority platforms like reddit, quora and linkedin seem to get extra visibility inside AI overviews. I'd focus on building a strong site first, then repurpose useful content across those platforms instead of relying on them completely. The 1 billion clicks sounds impressive, but I'd like to see how they're distributed since a few large publishers could be getting a huge share while smaller sites see only a small boost.

I think it's bullshit, especially when no context is provided. 1 billion clicks vs how many impressions those AI overviews get. Google gets close to 100 billion searches per week. AI overview appears on upto 60% of all Google searches.

That is to say, out of ~60 billion weekly searches Google is only willing to send 1 billion clicks to websites. Assuming they're not inflating that number.
 
It's sending this traffic directly to my ass

I have never clicked on any website after reading AI Overview, there is no reason to do that, the information is right there, why would I bother to read the same in a website? Maybe other people think different, but for me, it doesn't make sense.
 
Yeah that 1 billion number feels like marketing fluff. Even if it's real, most of those clicks are probably going to Reddit and Quora, not the average site. So it's not exactly a win for everyone.
 
every other question get asked on the chat box for clarity, few people will visit a website after finding answers on search overview

pulled gsc data for a few client sites recently, same pattern everywhere , impressions up but ctr down wherever ai overview triggers, feels like net loss not gain at site level. n yea reddit/quora seem to get the citation link way more than actual sites even for same topic, kinda rigged tbh

No other word comes to mind except nonsense. Theoretically, it's both yes and no here same as what I'd write, Google gives me 8 billion clicks a day. Impossible, because the processing power is nowhere near enough, the traffic formulas don't add up no matter which of the examples above you pick. Obviously, first place will grab the lion's share of traffic, but definitely not that much, because this is a simulation of short answers, not the detailed ones users actually need
 
yeah, and 999 million of those went to reddit and quora. google built a trillion-dollar scraper just to redirect all search traffic to forum spam.
