In my experience Shorts are great for getting inital reach, but they rarely convert into loyal subscribers on their own. The channels that actually grow steadily combine Shorts for discovery with longer videos that build watch time and retention. Consistency in upload schedule matters more than people expect too, the algorithm seems to reward channels it can predict.

From what I've seen, audience retention tends to have the biggest long-term impact. Good content that keeps viewers watching often performs better than relying on SEO or Shorts alone.
For me, the key advantage is developing the ability to combine the two formats rather than consider them as individual techniques. shorts can be used to familiarize users about the subject matter, but the true value is obtanined once the users have a reaison to watch the detailed version of the video.
from my point of view the key driver of growth is the ability to retain viewers after they have clicked through to ur channel. a great title or short will attract viewers to ur content but what drives growth is enssuring there is suficient value that they are compelled to stick around nd watchh more.

One thing that I have found out is that the first video viewed may not necessarily be the important one . Creating a growth loop where the viewer of the first video is driven to the second related video is key in establisihing an audience for your videos.

Retention's the fkn foundation everything else sits on — Shorts might get u discovered n SEO might get u searched, but if ur audience retention graph looks like a ski slope 20 secs in, the algo straight up stops recommendin u regardless of how good yer titles/thumbnails are, so fix the hook n pacing b4 obsessin over anything else

In my opinion, the main benefit is to provide the connection between the videos, not to treat each new upload as something separate.
short videos may allow you to attracts attention, but without any clear reason for users to explore your long form content further, the reach will be gone shortly.
Topic clusters with relevant videos are more beneficial for me than just trying to have as many uploads as possible.
