Hey there

I analyzed a competitors website using SEMRUSH and exported the data to create backlinks for my own website. However after spending 5 hours on this , I didn't find a single backlink from there.
Can you please suggest the best method that you guys use to competitors website backlinks?

I wouldn't try to copy every backlink a competitor has. A lot of what's exported in tools like SEMrush includes links that aren't realistically obtainable, such as editorial mentions, partnerships, or old opportunities that no longer exist. I usually filter for links that are actually replicable, like resource pages, niche directories, guest posts, or business listings, and then work from there. It also helps to compare a few competitors instead of just one, since you'll often spot backlink opportunities that show up across multiple sites.

How many links did you go through? There's always a few that you can replicate. What did you sort by?

It doesn't mean that I want to get backlinks from my competitors website. I want to get backlinks on those websites from where my competitor getting a link

That is what I was referring to. If you downloaded all your competitors link and found zero backlinks you can replicate - this is something I have never seen.

What did you find? Are they high quality links that cost so much, high authority sites that refuse to replace links, sites don't have any contact info, or your content doesn't match the context?

If you just downloaded the raw export from semrush you probably got spammed with thousands of scraper sites and useless splogs. Most of that noise is impossible to replicate manually anyway. @Social Account Seller what niche are you in? If your competitor is buying guest posts or renting PBN links you wont find a sign up button... you gotta pitch the admin or find the network footprint. Try filtering the export by referring domains that get at least 1k monthly traffic first. It weeds out 90% of the junk so you dont waste another 5 hours looking at dead profile pages.

+1. Interested in that as well. Following for an answer.

Well, we can help you :)

Case 1: You Already Have a List of Competitors

If you already know who your competitors are, we can analyze their backlink profiles and identify the backlinks they have that your website doesn't.

Case 2: You Only Have a Keyword
Let's say your target keyword is:
"Peptides USA"

Next, we'll examine the lower positions (e.g., positions 8–10), as well as high-performing parasite pages such as:

Reddit
YouTube
Other authority platforms

The reason, u can get reedit or you tube very easily.. ( i saw many services at bhw, in social media section)

Step 1: Analyze the Parasite Page
Let's take a YouTube result as an example.
We'll review its backlink profile.
In this example, the video has only 10 referring domains (RDs).

Just go one level deep

Step 3: Organize Everything with AI

Finally, we use AI to automatically categorize and prioritize the backlink opportunities.
For example:
Summary
  • Contextual Backlinks: 13
  • Branded / Citation Backlinks: 7

If your goal is to replicate this backlink profile, I'd recommend prioritizing the 13 contextual editorial links first, as they generally pass more SEO value than the branded/news citation links.

I hope it helps :)

Thanks

WEll, I can agree though

@Social Account Seller Five hours and zero replicable links usually means you found the answer and didn't recognise it. If a competitor's profile has nothing you can sign up for, it's because most of it was bought or rented. There's no form for that. Someone paid, or someone knows the site owner.

So stop trying to replicate the URL list. Replicate the pattern.

In Semrush that's Backlink Gap, not the raw export. You in one slot, three or four competitors in the others, then sort by the Matches column. A domain linking to one competitor is an anecdote. Four of them and you're looking at a list somebody sells.

Then split what survives into three piles:

  • Free: listings, resource pages, niche directories, anything with a real submit button.
  • Pitchable: real sites, real editors, no rate card. Slow, but it's the good stuff.
  • Paid: guest post networks, link inserts, PBN rentals. Nothing to replicate here, only to buy.

Most people's five hours die in the third pile without ever realising it's the third pile.

@TheoRank's traffic filter is the right first cut. The step after it is opening a few of the survivors by hand, because the tell is on the linking page and never in the export. An author with 90 posts spread across finance, casino and pet insurance. A sponsored tag. A write-for-us page. DR 60 pulling 200 visits a month -> that's inventory, and it's for sale to you at whatever your competitor paid.

@Starblazer @Nikolaos that's usually the honest answer to "what did you find". Not that the links cost too much or nobody replied. They were never available in the first place.

I sell in that third pile, so discount me accordingly.

Competitor backlink analysis works better when you focus on link patterns instead of copying every backlink. Look for guest posts, directories and relevant placements that can be recreated.

Looking at competitor backlinks is a good to start, but don't try to copy every link.

Instead, identify the links that are actually helping them, such as relevant guest posts, editorial mentions, resource pages, and industry directories. Then ask why they earned those links and whether you can create something similar or better.

Also, don't rely on just one competitor. Compare several top ranking sites to find backlink opportunities that appear across multiple competitors. Those are usually the links worth pursuing first.

yeah, semrush won’t always show backlinks that are real/active for every competitor page you picked
do a backlink gap, but then manually qualify the linking pages and replicate via outreach or stronger content so you earn links naturally. use a few angles: guest posts only where editorial intent is clear, resource/links pages with a real addition, digital PR for unlinked mentions, and fixing “link-worthy” assets on your side (stats, tools, comparisons, original research) so outreach isn’t just “please link”.
