Buying PBN links vs building them

Im interested in getting a few PBN links for the contextual, KW rich anchor text I need to spice up my link profile. What Im wondering is, I'm hearing a lot of "gurus" say you should only have one outbound link to your money site, and then link out to (something other than Wikipedia since that screams PBN) another site to make it look "real."

I plan on only buying auction domains since Im hearing that expired domains are a huge red flag to Google. The money, it seems to me will be spent on seperate hosts as to not leave a footprint connecting anything to my money site.

If I do purchase PBNs I'd rather buy them here since I know if there's anything spammy/ too many OBLs/ etc that person would get called out since this forum is full of other SEO's who know all the tricks that fly by night PBN builders on places like Fiver would get away with.

If I buy links from somebody here do you have a maximum amount of OBLs to others money sites? Is your PBN in all kinds of niches or just one? Do you use only auction domains or are these built on expired ones? I know I probably need to buy them to get them revealed as I'm assuming there's no money back guarantee, and I'm fine with that. Im trying to get a cost analysis as to whether it would be better to DIY or just buy them.

One last thing....in the event I build my own, Im not interested in competing with any other PBN builders in here....but I would be more than open to do link exchanges for like to like metrics like DA/PA (or UR/DR), niche relevancy, age of domain, etc. Is that safe since the PBNs and money sites will all be on four different hosts and there's no way Google can trace it? Is this something other PBN builders on here do with each other where it can be a bonafide link exchange without doing the usual "you link to my site I'll link back to yours" type of thing which is just asking for a penalty?

Thanks in advance....never build a PBN before, but since I'm planning on playing around with different page builders/etc, I thought I'd pick up a few cheap auction domains that have been ran thru Spamzilla, pass their spam test, I'd also run it thru ahrefs and make sure there isnt any crap on there like Chinese backlins, PRON, casino gambling, etc. I'd be more than happy to share my PBN with another PBN'er on here in the event we decide to do link exchange beforehand.

You can message each seller and ask them your questions before purchase.

Buying is way cheaper and less work.
Know what you want and look for a service that can provide it. Discuss in details before paying for anylink.

Not always. Since a zillion of sites are every day created, expire and about to expire this is not always true.

If you have the time I would do a 50/50 strategy. Start thinking on building your own PBN for the long term (the problem here is that it takes A LOT to find good priced domains given what you are looking for, if you plan to pay anything you see, then you will be paying almost the same of what an already PBN established has to offer to you without the hassle of having to manage everything by yourself).

For example, if you want to build for certain niche (not a generalistic PBN), it doesn't make sense to buy PBN domains from external niches to own by yourself. Many other properties you could have in mind when you decide to go into the auction or scrap certain expired domains.

I currently do all strategies: expiring, expired and sometimes buying (very rare to me right now since I cannot keep up nowadays with the domain stock I own) .

Okay, so what do you charge for a link? Non expired, DR/TF/CF and what niches do you have? Also, where is it hosted?

Building but it takes a bit of effort more than Buying Links.

I wouldn't say that's always the case. Thousands of domains are created, expire, and become available every day, so there are still opportunities if you're willing to put in the work.

A balanced approach often makes the most sense. You can use an established PBN when it fits your needs while gradually building your own network for the long term.

The biggest challenge is finding high-quality expired domains at reasonable prices. If you overpay for every domain you come across, you'll likely spend as much as you would on an existing PBN service, while still having to manage hosting, content, and maintenance yourself.

It's also important to stay niche-focused. If you're building a PBN for a specific industry, buying domains from unrelated niches usually won't provide the same value as acquiring relevant ones.

There are several ways to source domains, whether they're about to expire, already expired, or purchased through auctions. Personally, I use a mix of all three methods.
These days, though, I rarely buy more because I already have more domains than I can actively manage.
