Would you rather invest in better content or stronger backlinks if your budget only allowed one?

If you had to choose only one due to a limited budget, where would you invest first? Would you focus on creating higher quality content or building stronger backlinks?

Content quality first, every time backlinks amplify what's already good, but they can't fix content that doesn't satisfy search intent.

I will go for content first. If you build links for garbage content, you won't make any headway.

I will audit the site first before spending anything. If the content is already competitive then I would put the budget into backlinks. If the content is clearly weaker than the pages already ranking i would improve that first.

1. High Quality Content
2. Backlinks on those High Quality Content

honestly from running a link building agency, ive seen the opposite advice play out weird in real life — clients with "perfect" content but zero links just sit on page 4 forever, meanwhile ive seen mediocre content w a handful of relevant links jump to page 1 in weeks. google needs SOME signal to even know the page exists n matters. so if truly forced to pick one n site is brand new, id say a small batch of decent links first just to get crawled/indexed properly, then pour budget into content once its actually being seen. audit approach ppl mentioned is right long term tho, just depends how new/invisible the site currently is

alright, so we can't ignore the importance of quality content. is it possible that without creating the backlinks we can rank our blog only on the basis on content ?

Yes, if the target keywords and topics are low competition. In some cases, with great topical authority, you could rank.

In an ideal situation, invest in both content and links. But if you absolute have to choose one first, go for content then links.

Better content comes first. If content is not good, even bad backlinks will have no effect.

Content quality comes first for me. If the user finds your content helpful then you can done better even with low quality backlinks.

High quality content, because content is KING.

I would like to invest in content quality because if your content matches the search intent of the people and answering their every question in a simple way then you can performs better.
But if you invest for stronger backlinks and your content is of low quality then it does not makes big difference for you.

i'd invest in better content first. strong content has long term value and gives backlinks something worth pointing to. once the content is solid building quality backlinks becomes much more effective

For me personally if i had to select between either content or back links then i will choose content first. No matter how good the backlinks are without good content, those backlinks cannot give any returns to the website. But when you create valuable and informative content, it becomes easier for the website to get more links.

When the content is good and valuable enough, quality backlinks will give more of an edge over rankings compared to content alone.

I will answer with my experience so you can make an opinion:
i have created 5 projects in one year, big SaaS projects with good SEO. (Keywords, internal linking and etc...)
BUT I bought literally 0 backlinks.
Results:
4 projects after 1 year have 15 impressions per day in google search (based on google search console).
1 project has 3-5k impressions and 80-100 clicks daily from google search, but ironically they started dropping about 2 months ago from 7k impressions and 200 clicks per day. And this is not SaaS but a free tools website.

Still 0 backlinks bought.

I am now starting a new SaaS for which I will be buying good quality backlinks (already searching for them).

So in my opinion, backlinks are WAY MORE IMPORTANT than content. (of course content must be at least medium quality)

Content.. as quality content can be shared on social media to start bringing in traffic. Good backlinks won't matter without great content.

I'd invest in better content first. Strong backlinks help, but they work much better when they're pointing to pages that genuinely deserve to rank. Good content also keeps paying off long after it's published.
