really comes down to what you are building. if you just want to redirect power then yeah links are king. but if you plan to rebuild the site you need to make sure the history is clean. too many domains look amazing on paper but got hammered by spam updates years ago and will never rank again. always check the wayback machine first to see what was actually on there.

Traffic can be faked, and links can be toxic if the domain had a bad past. For an aged domain, I’d check Wayback, old niche, link quality, and whether the new site actually matches the old use.
