Quality content can rank for low competition keywords, but backlinks still make a big difference in competitive niches. The best results come from combining great content with relevant high quality links and solid on page seo
From what i have seen having quality content helps in having ur pages indexed but the backlinks help when u need to beat others in rankking. It is better to have quality conttent along with a few backlinks than having many backlinks to poor content.

Yes the quality content alone rank on google but the results are not better .If you are working with high quality content and still use backlinks than you got better results.
