I prioritize long-tail keywords because they're less competitive and easier for new websites to rank for.

I look at small websites that are already ranking. If they can rank, I know the niche is not too competitive.
 
Start by looking at the problems which are asked by people mostly. Then check that if those topics have enough search volume and low competition before choosing a niche and also make sure you have some knowledge about the topic so that you can write the useful content.

Spot on advice. To add to this, once I find a potential niche on Google Trends, I like to jump onto Reddit and Quora.

Looking at what actual people are complaining about, asking, or struggling with in specific subreddits gives you a massive advantage. If you can find consistent pain points that people are actively discussing, you have found a great angle that raw keyword data tools might miss.
 
Find a broad topic first, collect long-tail keywords, and analyze search intent.
Low competition keywords with clear user needs usually make the best niche opportunities.
 
A simple method is finding low volume keywords with buyer or informational intent, grouping them into topics, and building content around clusters.

It's been mentioned a few times but I'd say ask a high-powered AI to look into a target niche and research sub niches

You should chose a niche who is not conquered by big sites with big pillars or media news press sites. Create a new category in your niche market and be the niche !

One method that has worked well for me in the past is by taking a broad topic nd looking at sub topics beffore jumping into searching for keywords. when i see a lot of unanswered questions or articles that r very similar ranking high up i take this as an indication that there might be room for impprovement in this niche.
