Covering the typical tracks is a given.
But that's only really relevant for large networks.

The biggest issue people are facing is improper usage.

That means mainly anchor text, surrounding text, OBL and link velocity.

Search engines don't need to check (and honestly don't care about) hundreds of footprints if you built 50 links in 2 days all with exact match anchor text.
You just gave yourself away to them on a silver platter.

The bottom line is:
Your money site ranks, not PBN.
After it passes certain thresholds, they just need to check how it got there.
They don't need to prematurely scope the entire internet for all domains owned by John Brown.
 
Google is much better now at picking up patterns - like shared footprints (hosting, themes, link patterns), sudden link spikes, and irrelevant anchors. Even if you try to hide things, it's hard to keep it natural at scale.
What's been working safer for me is focusing in relevant sites, real traffic, and natural links instead of trying to outsmart detection.

The best PBNs are real sites. Even before the term PBN existed we were creating networks of sites in the same or similar niches, with a main purpose of linking back to our money site. Tool sites, personal blogs, events pages, pure information sites, review sites etc. If you could make some $$$ from adsense etc on these sites, all the better!
 
AI understands behaviour from patterns. Most people leave footprints while building tens of backlinks which are similar to footprints while building thousands of backlinks. You'll be excited to do something for the first time but work like a machine when you need to repeat something several times a day on a regular basis. Search engines like Google catch these footprints. Sometimes they catch a network due to obvious signs of a PBN and hunt down all the sites in their network.

pbn still works but raw networks get clipped fast; modern builds look like real sites, not link farms. no shared footprints; unique themes, content, cms mix, different hosts. anchors stay mostly branded/naked. spoofing tricks less relevant now; google looks at patterns over time; link velocity, site quality, traffic signals. whois/ssl/dns only matter if u repeat same setups across network.
 
I think PBNs have become much harder to manage because Google looks at many signals, not just links. Things like content quality, link patterns, and overall site behavior matter more now.

Rather than focusing on a single footprint being significant in PBNs, the important aspect is the overal footprint being visible. If the purpos of these site is to link only, then certain feature are likely to appear.
 
There is not really one signal that gives a PBN away anymore. Google seems to look at the overall quality and purpose of a site rather than just one footprint. If a network exists only to pass links and has little real value then it is a much bigger risk today than it used to be.

However, it is not the individual footprint but rather the general patern that is imprtant. A website created exclusively for backlink won’t serve any purpose and therefore probably would not have much traffic

I’d say the biggest change is that running a PBN is much more about operations than tricks. Keeping sites updated, publishing relevant content, and maintaining them consistently takes far more effort than simply acquiring aged domains.

People spend a lot of time chasing technical details, but in practice, networks usually stand out because they’re poorly maintained or built around obvious patterns. A well-organized network with genuinely useful sites is a very different proposition from a collection of abandoned blogs with the same layout and posting habits.
 
I think Google has become much better at looking at the overall picture instead of just individual signals. A lot of footprints come from patterns, like similar content, linking behavior, or sites that don't look like real projects. Personally, I think building something that looks and works like a genuine website is a more sustainable approach than only focusing on hiding signals.
