Can one early downvote kill a good reddit post ?

I have noticed that when one of my posts gets a few downvotes then it does not seem to reach many people. But when a post gets a few early upvotes then it keeps getting more views and comments.

Do you think the first few votes decide how well a Reddit post performs?

Early downvotes can definitely kill your reach because it's a sign that people are not interested in the topic. Something that is good for you might not be that valuable for others.
 
I do not think one downvote can kill a good post. if people find it useful, it usually recovers with more upvotes.
 
It definitely feels that way, early engagement seems to help a lot, but if the post is good it can still pick up later, Imo.

while I think early involvement is beneficial I do not think it is the panacea. Reddit operates within context which may be absent from the strt but may come into the picture as thing become more intriguing nd more people get involved.
 
More than reach, early downvotes result in more mindless downvotes. It's a hive mind, people follow herd mentality, they'd simply downvote posts and comments that are already downvoted.
 
Yes, early votes can make a big difference. Posts that get few early downvotes are struggle to recover whereas early positive engagement helps the posts to reach more people.
 
Yes, they can but they are not everything. If a post is useful and matches the subreddit then it can get more engagement with the time.
 
Early reactions probably help, but the quality of the discussion afterward seems more important posts that start real conversations usually have a better chance to keep moving.
 
the first few votes may affect the initial push but the bigger difference comes from whether people find the post worth discussing and adding their own thoughts
 
I think momentum is important so it can be harmful as can early upvotes be useful

You are 100% correct. Reddit’s 'Hot' algorithm heavily weighs early engagement. A few immediate upvotes push your post into the 'Rising' tab, giving it massive visibility. On the flip side, getting 2 or 3 early downvotes drops the post's score to zero, effectively killing its reach in the 'New' tab before most users ever see it."
 
Downvotes are a measure of content quality and how satisfied people are with what you've shared. I think they're a valuable form of feedback that can help you refine and improve your content strategy.
 
Yes, it can kill it. Reddit looks for early clicks and likes. A quick downvote makes the system think your post is spam, so it stops showing it to people.
