Sudden Traffic DROP

Hi guys,

Need some advice.

One of my client's casino sites is just a one-page website. Since last month the traffic has dropped a lot and GSC clicks are also down. There is no manual action or any warning in GSC.

I checked the backlink profile and found around 19k backlinks from about 400 referring domains. I didn't build these links, so I'm not sure if they are part of the problem.

If you were in this situation, what would you check first?
  1. Should I focus on updating the content and improving keyword targeting?
  2. Or is it worth auditing those backlinks and removing/disavowing the bad ones?
  3. Is there anything else you'd look at before making changes?
Has anyone seen something similar?

The first thing that neds to be analyzed is the ranking and keywords loss situation, folowed by analysis of the backlink portfolio. The disavow tool has to be used only when there are evident indicatios that the website has toxic links. It is important to remembe that single page websites might lose rankings becuz of the change in user intent.

Check if your competitor have update their website with new content, because one-pager tend to get outdated once use intent change. lok at the following 19,000 URLs for anchor spaming however make sure not to disavow anything if no negative SEO is taking place.
 
Issue is one page site, Google is updating its algo everyday, i lost one of my 5 pages adult site. You need to fix your site and remove links which looks spammy.
 
Remove spam links and after that focus on updating the content and improving keyword targeting. Best way is updating your articlesAnd don't focus too much on backlinks you didn't create. Google likely won't take them into algorithm.
 
You need to do an audit and check what your competitors are doing that you don't or vice-versa. The algorithm favours sites for several reasons and most audits try to find the gaps between our sites and that of competitors. You should also check user intent mismatch to see if you provide what users need. The backlinks can only be a part of the equation and you don't lose everything because of spam backlinks alone. However, it's safe to get rid of low quality ones to regain the lost authority.
 
Check if the rankings dropped after Google update first, I wouldn't rush to disavow links unless there's clear evidence they're causing the problem.

If it were me i would not do more than one change at once. first i would try comparing what keyworrds nd pages suffered from the lack of visibility the most. then i would find out if anything happened regarding indexing, crawling nd user experience. It is even more important for one page websites bcz they r highly sensitive to any changes in the sphere. backlinking could only be a part of the research.
 
Before getting started on the backlink removal process, I would first look into ranking positions, indexation, and if the drop has anything to do with the update of an algorithm. It is not easy to rank for casinos on one page, so working on content intent should be the first step in any situation.

First I am going to compare the keyword that no longer appear on the GSC with any metric related to the landing page before addressing the backlink profile. this is becuz one-page websites are quite vulnerable when it comes to changes in user intent.

In case of a one-page website, I would look into lost searches, SERP update nd competitor advances prior to delving into the backlink. the 19K link sound suspicious but it’s alway relevance, intent or algorithm change that brings the fall at first place.
 
I'd probably avoid assuming the backlinks are the main issue right away. The first thing I'd do is compare the pages and keywords that lost traffic, then check whether the drop lines up with a recent Google update or changes on the site itself. If the backlinks look obviously spammy, they're worth reviewing, but I'd also look at content freshness, internal linking, and whether competitors have improved. In competitive niches, it's often a combination of factors rather than just one.

I focus on the basic's before disavowing links, Compare traffic loss with keyword drops, Refresh the content if needed, and only worry about backlink's if you find clear Spam or Manipulation.
 
I do start by checking which queries and pages actually lost Traffic in GSC before making any major changes. A one page site is already limited, so I do also compare what Competitors are doing now. I wouldn't rush to disavow unless there's clear evidence the Backlink profile is causing the issue.
 
19k backlinks you didn't build on a one-page casino site? Congrats, someone's either trying to help you or torpedo you and there's no note left behind either way. Before you go full disavow-everything mode, check when those links actually landed vs when the drop happened, if there's a cluster right before, that's your prime suspect. Also peek at GSC Security Issues even though you said no manual action, algo devaluations are sneaky like that and don't always send a memo. If the timing lines up with a core update instead, it's probably your content/relevance, not the links, and disavowing won't save you. One page sites are basically riding a unicycle, any little wobble in indexing or UX shows up fast.
 
I'd avoid jumping straight to disavowing links. I'd first check what actually lost rankings and whether the drop lines up with a Google update. If it's a one-page site, I'd probably start by refreshing the content and making sure it still matches search intent. Only dig into the backlink profile if you see clear signs of spam or a manual action.
 
For me, digital PR has consistently delivered better results than expected. A single placement on a high-authority, relevant site often has a bigger long-term impact than chasing dozens of average backlinks. It's also great for referral traffic and brand visibility, so it's been a win beyond just SEO.

Firstly, I would asses impressions. If impresions are also low, then there might be problem with visibility. however, if impresions are high, but click are low, then CTR problem need to be assesed or even some SERP problem.
