You can absolutely rank without building backlinks, and I've done it plenty of times. The key is being strategic with your keyword research. Instead of chasing highly competitive terms, focus on long-tail keywords or topics with lower competition. I've seen good content rank without many backlinks, but mostly in less competitive niches.
For more competitive keywords, backlinks still seem to matter.
