Quality content definitely matters, but backlinks still play a big role in building authority. For competitive keywords, having both is usually the best approach

If you have zero or so competition - its possible. You just need to do at least 10-20 page website and link it internally properly. I've seen cases when this approach allowed to get to the top in the affiliate niche.

In my opinion, content is king, and backlinks are queen. They are indispensable unless your content is exceptionally outstanding and attracts a huge number of people.

Yes, you can rank on google without backlink. For that. you have to make quality content and use low-competition keywords. But, for high volume keywords you have to make backlinks to get faster results.
Quality content rank for low competition keywords, but backlinks are still important for competitive niches.

Quality content is very important, but in most cases it is not enough by itself. If the keyword is easy and there is little competition, good content can rank without many backlinks.
For competitive keywords, backlinks are still important in 2026. Good backlinks help Google trust your website and improve your rankings. I think the best results come from combining quality content with high-quality backlinks.

Forget about content quality and relevance, I'm seeing 10 irrelevant pages from an authority site ranking for a single keyword. So, Google values backlinks 1000 times more than content. The content quality and user intent can only be considered when you're competing with equal authority sites. If you don't have authority, you won't rank regardless of content quality & other factors.

Content gets you in the game backlinks get you noticed I have tested near identical articles the one with even a few relevant backlinks beat the "better" one every time. Not saying content doesn't matter, just that authority signals still carry a lot of weight.
