Why do you think there are so few backlinking tools these days?

I was just thinking about a thought process I had a lot back in the day: "Why do people call tools like Ahrefs SEO tools". I thought that because to me SEO is about backlinks, they have always been the biggest driver of rankings. At no point in time have I seen a situation where content has been able to rank on it's own, or that ranks couldn't be improved with backlinks.

It may be less true these days, that backlinks are the whole SEO game, but I still firmly believe that the website with the better backlinks will win out in almost all cases.

With that little preamble out of the way, I get to my question: Why do you think there are so few backlinking tools these days?

I know that SB / GSA still exist but they are so rudimentary in a world of AI. Who wants to be blasting out thousands of shitty links that Google will barely notice, I get better results from posting stuff to the big social sites. So why are there no tools targeting these platforms?

Maybe I'm a bit out of the loop and there is a big SENuke style app that everyone is using but it seems like if you want backlinks today you need to make them yourself or pay someone for it. Where are the SEO Devs that should be doing this?

Those automated links no long move the needle, at least not as much as they used to. Today, they're in fact qualified to be regarded as shitty links, so why should there be tools creating such links?

Unless there are other kind of links you're talking about. Remember guest post, niche edits links can't be auto-generated.

I think the market changed. Building backlink tools is probably harder now, and a lot of people seem to prefer outreach or buying placements instead of automating everything.
I actually think it would be way easier to build such a tool today. Having made No Hands SEO (the tool they based GSA SER on) such a long time ago and pioneering that type of tool I am sure it would be so much easier today than ever.

AI can write scrapers and posters that are pretty reliable in minutes, it used to take a good bit of trial and error to get that sort of thing done.

If I weren't so bogged down with work I would definitely be looking in that direction for a tool to build. I haven't used xrumer so maybe that does what I think is missing but I would have expected more options as the methods required became more established and the barrier to entry (because of AI) is so low.

I dunno, I was just ruminating and wondering where the cool shit went. Every current tool is old as hell by now.

Interesting perspective! I think the demand is changing, and people are looking for smarter SEO workflows rather than standalone backlink tools.

I think you could be right. From my perspective, the majority of people have been fed a bunch of misinformation about what works. People spend so much time on "SEO tools" that give insights into what needs improving and it basically comes down to create more / better content and get backlinks.

Like, take your sentence for example: How does a "smarter SEO workflow" get you backlinks? How does that improve rankings? What even does that mean? I'm not trying to get at you personally, it is just the sort of wording that people use these days to obfuscate the reality of content + links = ranks.

Google has gotten incredibly fast at identifying and nuking automated footprint patterns from classic blast tools. The dev shift has completely moved away from spam platforms to AI outreach engines like Respona, Smartlead, or custom scraping setups that handle hyper-personalized PR pitches. Modern automation is all about scaling human-looking relationships rather than raw link counts. :anyway:

Terrible bot post. Claiming to be responsible for work that I did on my own.

I am not really talking about a tool to mass spam, we have that in GSA and xrumer. I am more talking about something that will post your content to the major socials and sites like that. This sort of thing gets (weak) backlinks but also it gets your content in front of the right audience.

This used to be very simple with the APIs that the sites offered, now they took the APIs away and it isn't much harder at all. It's simple browser component automation.

I don't consider things like Respona or smartlead to be related to this topic, tbh, One sells PBN / "guest posts" links and the other looks to be an email marketing app.

Yeah, which is why it is so strange to me that there is no decent commercial option. I already maintain a bunch of software, I don't have the time to maintain another one.

For anyone reading this; if you are thinking of starting to code a side project, do not do another Reddit / Linkedin lead scraper, make something that can post to the major social sites, I'll be your customer.

Because automated links have no value this days
Market changed

I think it's because the easy automation days are mostly gone now. Most authority sites have way stronger spam protection, APIs are limited, and AI generated spam gets flagged so much faster than before. These days quality and relevance matter way more than volume, so most people end up either building links manually or just outsourcing them instead of relying on automated tools.

the coding part is probably easier than ever, but keeping it working is the real problem. socials change layouts, add checks and ban automation constantly, so maintaining 20+ posters becomes a full time job. still surprised nobody built a decent paid tool for this tho.

People were saying that before I released No Hands SEO (that was before GSA SER, for anyone unsure of how long ago that was). That tool was getting people first page rankings with so little effort. Before that nobody thought it could be so easy.

I think that people's views have changed, I think it is still very possibly to automate this sort of thing.

Maintaining software is a full time job, that is why people charge for it.

I guess my point of all of this is that I want someone to make the damn tool. I'd pay and I know many others would to.

Backlink tools are rare today because Google is much better at detecting low-quality, automated links. Mass links building software has become less effective and risky, so the market has shifted to digital PR, outreach, niche edits, and creating link-worthy content. The ROI on automation is much lower than it was 10 years ago.

This is mostly because such tools are not much effective now. Google has become very smart now.

I think one of the biggest reasons is that modern link building has become much harder to automate, years ago you could build thousands of links with software and still see results but today Google is much better at detecting spam patterns so those tools arent nearly as effective.

The links that move rankings now usually come from outreach, editorial placements, niche sites, PR or real relationships, things that dont scale as easily with automation, AI can certainly help with research and outreach but it cant reliably replace the human side of acquiring quality backlinks.

Thats probably why the market has shifted from backlink automation tools to backlink service providers, the value today is in getting relevant, trusted placements rather than generating huge volumes of links.

Good question. The backlink tool market has consolidated a lot over the past few years. Most standalone tools got acquired by larger suites - Cognitive SEO by Link-Assistant, Monitor Backlinks by Mangools, etc. The economics make it tough to sustain a solo backlink tool when Ahrefs and SEMrush offer link analysis as part of a broader package at competitive prices.

From a technical standpoint, maintaining a fresh backlink index is incredibly expensive. You need a massive crawler infrastructure and the data gets stale quickly. Google's disavow tool changes and the decreasing value of certain link types have also reduced demand for basic backlink checking.

For most users, the built-in backlink features in AHREFS or SEMrush are sufficient. What specific backlink data are you finding hard to get?
