I agree. Backlinks alone are no longer enough, because if your content, user experience, and topical authority are a bit weak then even those strong links will not really lift rankings in a steady way. The pages that perform best right now usually mix excellent content with relevant backlinks, rather than leaning on links only, and that combination matters more than people expect.

links can still push a decent site further but they can't fix a fundamentally weak one anymore, google's too good at that now
 
I don’t think backlinks can “save” a weak site anymore the way they used to. They can still help, but only up to a point. If the content, intent match, and overall structure are weak, links tend to give only temporary movement at best.

In most cases I’ve seen, the sites that recover or grow long-term are the ones that fix the fundamentals first, then use backlinks to amplify not compensate.
 
Links alone won't rescue a site with bad UX and thin content anymore. Google's modern updates score sites holistically, meaning backlinks now act as an amplifier rather than a standalone fix. If UX, content, or topical authority is weak, visitors bounce before the links even get a chance to prove their worth, so you end up paying for authority that never gets used. Before building any links, I'd fix the on-page and technical basics like speed, mobile, and crawlability, then work on topical authority and content depth, and keep an eye on UX signals like bounce rate and time on page.

Once that's solid, links amplify what's already working instead of trying to fix what's broken.

Every website is weak until it builds up some sort of authority. Authority cannot be manufactured on your own - it comes from third party signals and influences. Guess what backlinks are...
 
I Still build links, but only after fixing the site it self. If visitors are finding value, extra backlink's don't seem to move the needle much.

links can still push a site, but they wont fix a bad one anymore. if the page doesnt match intent or users bounce fast, backlinks just make the weakness more obvious. id fix content/structure first, then send links to pages already showing some life.

I would say niche matters. Me and my friend are running a very high-competition niche with just a few simple keyword-stuffed pages. No rich media, tons of affiliate links with spoofs, and we're having great ROI. The entire site is built with GML 5.1 and has over 50,000+ pages. I can't reveal the niche, and there are tons of niches out there, but we found this one through testing. That said, my own website (ecom) has perfect off-page optimization, UI, and high-quality content and is still struggling to rank. So now I know it all depends on the market and niche you're working in. Link building is a must and a big player, but it all depends on the niche you're working on.
 
Backlinks can reinforce a good site, but they rarely fix a weak one. If content and UX are the problem, links just delay the inevitable - fix the foundation first, then build links on top of it.
