Weibo used to be one of the biggest platforms for viral reach in China, but with newer apps gaining popularity, I’m curious how marketers are using it today.
Are you still seeing meaningful traffic from Weibo, or has engagement shifted elsewhere?

weibo remains a highly relevant, albeit evolved, traffic source in China,
especially for brand awareness and top-of-funnel marketing
While it has lost some of its previous dominance to platforms
like Douyin and Xiaohongshu, it retains a massive user base of
roughly 590 million monthly active users

Still good if your tartgeting china market

Weibo remains a vital traffic source because it functions as the primary platform for public conversation and celebrity culture in China which makes it indispensable for brand awareness and viral potential. While platforms like Douyin or Little Red Book have captured more daily active time for short form video and shopping advice Weibo still dominates the trending topics and news cycle where massive reach can happen within hours. You should use it as a top of funnel discovery engine and a place to engage with trending hashtags to drive users toward your private traffic channels or sales pages. The most effective strategy today involves using Weibo for influencer collaborations and real time social interactions that other more algorithmically restricted platforms cannot provide as effectively.

Weibo still gives decent initial viral reach in China if you work with mid-tier KOLs (10k–100k followers) and post during peak hours (8–10 PM Beijing time) using trending hashtags. But real engagement and conversions have mostly moved to Xiaohongshu (for lifestyle/ecom) and Douyin (for short video). Most marketers now use Weibo just for awareness then funnel traffic to those two platforms because conversion on Weibo has dropped a lot.

Today it’s more about amplification + credibility than pure growth — good for trends, PR, and boosting visibility.
Real engagement and conversion have mostly shifted to Douyin / Xiaohongshu / WeChat (private traffic).

It still works, just not as crazy as it used to be. You can get some decent traffic, but most of the real engagement has moved to newer apps. If targeting China, it’s still useful, just don’t rely on it alone.

Still seeing some traffic from Weibo, but it feels more niche-dependent now. Some industries still perform well, while others seem to get better engagement or newer platforms. It probably depends a lot on the target audience.

Weibo remains one of the leading social media platforms in China. If you're looking to promote your business or content in the Chinese market, I think Weibo is a platform you shouldn't overlook.

For the Chinese market, Weibo is still a platform that can generate strong traffic compared with many other social platforms.

Yes, if you're looking at the China market, that's a perfect example.

weibo can still move attention, but a lot of brands see the heavy lifting shift to douyin (chinese tiktok) for discovery

I think weibo is not as powerful as before, but it still works well for certain niches like entertainment, fashion, and local chinese audiences.

Weibo can still work if you know your audience. It’s not as easy as before, but niche communities and trending topics can still bring good exposure.
