Why do some websites rank higher even if they use a few backlinks?

because 5 links from relevant, high authority sites in your niche will always beat 500 random links from unrelated blogs. Google got way smarter at evaluating link context. also a lot of those "few backlinks" sites have insane internal linking and topical coverage that people overlook when they only check Ahrefs

Because quality matters more than quantity. Strong content, better on-page SEO, and high-authority links can outperform many weak backlinks. Google focuses more on relevance and trust now.

Sometimes it is because those sites have stronger content and better on page SEO. Also a few high quality and relevant backlinks can be more powerful than many weak ones. Domain age, user engagement, and overall site trust can also play a role.

Happens a lot now.
It’s not about number of backlinks, but quality. A few strong, relevant links can beat hundreds of weak ones.
Plus, content, internal linking, and user behavior matter more now. So even with fewer links, a site can still outrank others.

Usually it is because of stronger content, better on page SEO, and higher authority. A few relevant, high quality links can outperform may week ones. Also things like user experience and site trust play a role.

Year ago it was backlinks that matter most. now google has changed. it considers links relevance, user website experience and many other signal. its a complicated thing not just numbers.

From what i have been learning, google looks at the overall quality of the site, not just the number of backlinks. Things like content and user experience seem to matter a lot as well.

Higher-quality backlinks — Domain authority, topical relevance, and link context matter far more than volume. A DR 75 site link beats 30 DR 20 links.
On-page SEO strength — Better keyword targeting, E-E-A-T signals, schema markup, internal linking, and Core Web Vitals performance offset fewer backlinks.

There are many factors in this matter. Like the domain being old, the quality of the content, the images not being stolen, properly choosing the keywords, and many other factors.

This is because they are more effective in terms of quality, authority, and user experience.

Because strong content, domain trust and a few high quality relevant links can outweigh a large number of weak backlinks.

A few highly relevant and authoritative backlinks can outperform hundreds of low quality links content quality and search intent also play a major role in rankings.

Half the "few backlinks" winners just sit in niches where everyone has few links, so 5 relevant ones is the whole game. Links break the tie between relevant pages, they don't make a page relevant.
