The End of an Era

Sony Playstation will stop making discs for ps4/5 and consoles
going forward after January 2028, all playstation purchases
will be digital only , no more physical disc collecting
you will own nothing . - thoughts -

This is a huge bummer. We're basically just paying for expensive long term rentals at this point. If a server shuts down, all those games are gone forever. It completely kills the used game market and sharing with friends.

Guess Sony wants everyone locked into the PlayStation Store instead of trading discs.

I haven't bought a disc in a long time, but reading this definitely hit me with a wave of nostalgia.

I got my first PS1 around 29 years ago (1997)!

Man, those were the days.

Playing Resident Evil without a memory card and with no way to save or continue... These new generations don't know what real suffering is

in last 2 months i bought Expedition 33
crimson desert, Pragmata, Atomic Heart
all on disc - all new. i like the feel of
a disc in a box .

95% of my games are disc only

Bad news, but I'm going to keep doing the same thing: buying physical discs while they're still being released that way, and then buying second-hand copies much cheaper. There are enough games out there to play for several lifetimes.

Looking at the rising costs of storage, it will only end up costing more.

others will follow as well. for example nintendo.

its not only bad for gamers, its also bad for all the retail stores.

the only winner here is Sony. this entire industry has stopped being gamer friendly a long time ago.

I an fearing same thing for PC gaming too. (Not the CD option but about ownership of games)

We will own nothing and be happy. It's already happened with cars.

Back in the 90s, it was normal to see 20-year-old cars running perfectly on the road because they were purely mechanical. If something broke, you bought a cheap part, pulled out a wrench, and fixed it yourself. You actually owned that vehicle.

Today, cars are basically computers on wheels. Everything is locked behind proprietary software, and you can’t work on your own ride anymore without specialized corporate diagnostic tools. Because of this, cars have become disposable. People get tired of the digital headaches or fear the massive repair bills once the tech glitches, so they just flip or lease them every few years.

Shame, I loved collecting those with my twin brother, then exchanging them and stuff, cool days. It breaks my heart that this is going, but it is also the nature of things... moving forward. Well, hopeful enough to see better offering form sony these coming years.

the whole point of ps3/4/5 was to play games/ blu ray films
dvds/ music discs - now its all being taken away and sony
calls it progress

They can do that because you have zero control over the hardware,that is why I love PCs you can always Crack games lol

If hard disc stopped , ownership of assets will no more.

Problem with digital is what happens if you file a dispute at the PSN store for say an unauthorized transaction or did something that could be in violation of PSN terms of service. You lose everything? Thousands spent and now you can no longer access your PSN Account.

This is a really bad business approach.

Ill just be buying shared accounts moving forward from resellers. No need to give into this bad business model.

They know people won't do anything significant, As usual everyone will scream online for a while, but when the PS6 launches and their favorite game, What will they do? They’ll Buy it, That's what you get when there is no competition

i own ps1/2/3/4/5 - i wont be buying a ps6
if i want a decent digital platform only - ide go syeam
