The link was placed in a fresh, relevant article on USC dot edu subdomain.
The domain actually has the high authority, and the bulk of the links.
It has always been debatable whether links flow from a domain to subdomain or not, but I still appreciate this kind of link.
Google indexes it , and stick around for sometime.
On the other side, I think the pricing is 'fairly' adjusted
