Is Topical Authority More Important Than Backlinks Now?

Hi everyone,

I have noticed many people talking about topical authority and content clusters instead of focusing only on backlinks. Do you think building strong topical authority is becoming more important than link building for long term rankings, or do both still carry equal weight?
Yeah, I think both still matter.

Backlinks are still important for trust, but without solid topical coverage it’s hard to hold rankings long term. From what I’ve seen, sites that build content clusters around a topic tend to stay more stable, and links just boost that foundation.

So I’d say it’s more about balance now, not choosing one over the other.

You see websites with DR 50+ ranking better on serp ? Well it’s all about about authority . Decent links with authority are the best way to go about it . While writing articles also helps you need the domain authority to learn rank those articles which is mainly earned authority links .

I've noticed that websites with complete topical coverage often rank for hundreds of long-tail keywords, even with fewer backlinks. But for high-volume keywords, authoritative backlinks still make a noticeable difference.

I think topical authority has become much more important but I wouldnt say it has replaced backlinks Comprehensive topic coverage strong internal linking and high quality content create a solid foundation while relevant backlinks still help build authority.

They both carry equal weight for me, therefore you should aim to do both at the best of your ability.

Topical authority is the foundation .Relevance backlink are the accelerator.

Topical authority builds long-term trust, while backlinks validate that trust. In competitive niches, you need both. I'd focus on building comprehensive content clusters first, then earn relevant, high-quality links to maximize their impact.

I think both still matter but I would focus on topical authority first. If the content is well covered and actually helpful links seem to have stronger impact later,Backlinks alone do not feel like enough anymore.

I would say topical authority gives you a stronger foundation. Backlinks still matter, but they seem to work better when the site already covers a topic really well.focusing on just one without the other feels limiting these days.
