I've been thinking about this a lot recently. After years and years of trying to get something off the ground, I finally managed to creat eat income stream that generates a liveable income. Note the word liveable.
As good as the income is, i am still in a precarious situation where if it were to go down (which is never out of the question) I would have to set up something else and fast. Which makes me think of just how much luck play a big role in this online income space.
Sure, skill is a huge factor too - and if I knew nothing about copywriting, direct response marketing, buyer psychology etc, I'd be making absolutely nothing.
I've recently been reading the book fooled by randomness, which has made me see just how lucky & random a lot of success is. But a lot of gurus will make you believe it is all down to their skill and nothing else. For example maybe I wouldn't have pursued this business model if I didn't have an early viral video, my first conversion didn't come as quick, I was born in a country where payment processors are a huge stumbling block.
And I think of this more and more as I try to diversify my income with other models, and the learning curve is so big at first it makes you question everything. I paid to get into a group the other day with a bunch of supposed affiliate mega minds, and the info inside was so surface level I almost asked for a refund.
But the people inside are making money with it, so what do I know? How much of this is luck vs skill vs consistency i'm not sure.
I thought there was going to be a point to this post, but I guess there isn't really. Hopefully it doesn't come across as pessimistic as that's not what I intended.
If anything it's optimistic, because when luck and randomness comes into play - one of the smartest things you can do is increase your surface area of opportunities that can encounter said luck and randomness. So the key is a lot of times to just up your work rate, especially when it comes to things like organic traffic, social media etc. But of course the content you post has to be good too, because if you post crap and up the frequency you're just producing crap at scale.
Maybe I should write this stuff in a personal journal instead! Sorry for the pointless ramble. Thanks
