It really depends on your site’s setup, not just raw traffic numbers. In my experience, once performance starts dropping during peak hours or you notice slow load times despite optimization, it’s usually a sign to upgrade. Focus on server resources (CPU, RAM, I/O limits) rather than traffic alone when deciding.

No fixed number most outgrow shared hosting around 10k–50k monthly visits or when performance drops (slow speed, downtime). It depends more on site load than just traffic.

not just traffic its spikes that kill shared hosting. around 20k-50k visits a day it starts struggling.

There are many factors, how that traffic is effecting your CPU usage, and network usage? you need to see both of those graphs to determine, based on your website or application nature.

For me, it was not just traffic, it was performance issue. Once sites started slowing down during small traffic spikes, I moved away from shared hosting. Even around moderate traffic levels, switching helped with stability and loading speed.

You should ditch shared hosting the second you start seeing consistent daily traffic spikes or notice your site speed dragging. It is way better to just migrate to a managed vps early so you do not deal with downtime when your content finally pops off

For me, it was not just traffic but performance issue. Once sites started slowing down or getting resource limits, I moved to VPS. That happened somewhere around moderate traffic, but it really depend on the hosting quality.

It’s not always about exact traffic numbers tbh, it’s more about CPU/RAM limits, slow DB queries, and how busy the server gets with other ppl’s sites. If your site starts loading slow, throwing errors, or support keeps blaming resource usage, that’s usually the sign you’ve outgrown it.
I’d say once the project starts making money or ppl actually rely on it, just move to a VPS. I switched to LuxHost VPS and it felt way smoother

There's been case studies on BHW where they compared shared hosting to a dedicated IP/VPS. The shared hosting always fell off. Dedicated resources will always outperform shared hosting and load speed is one of the most important metrics for google. Honestly most of them use litespeed and idk why everyone's hyping it so much, but especially wordpress lags. My experience with shared hosting wasn't great and I don't recommend it.
If you're starting out and budget is tight, shared hosting is fine, but your first goal should be to move away from it.

those "unlimited" shared hosting plans are complete bs anyway. i didn't even outgrow it because of high daily traffic, it was concurrent users that killed my sites. the moment i sent an email blast or got a small rush from social, the database would just choke and throw 503 errors. if you're running basic static html you can stretch it pretty far, but wordpress with elementor or woocommerce will die on shared hosting with like 30 active users online at the same time. just get a cheap vps and cloudflare, saves so much headache in the long run.

Basically anything that is commercially viable requires a better plan than a shared hosting.
Even a static page that's a presentation for a business, where people should make in-calls or reservations or to find it cannot benefit from being on a shared plan, risking outages or shared hosting related issues.
