Are we overcomplicating SEO in 2026?

Sometimes it feels like everyone is chasing the newest trick, tool or update.
Meanwhile i keep seeing simple websites with decent content ranking surprisingly well. Do you think SEO is becoming more complicated or are people just making it more complicated than it need to be? Would love to hear different options.

tbh i think people are overcomplicating it a lot… basics still seem to work if done properly
 
i think it’s a bit of both, SEO has definitely gotten more layered, especially with AI search
 
Imo, SEO is indeed getting a bit harder for affiliates + informational sites or doorway sites.

Competition is relatively the same compared for local businesses.

With AI, it just doesn't make sense just focusing on SEO, you should explore other platforms for traffic as well.
 
I think people overcomplicate the wrong parts.

SEO is harder now if you’re doing thin affiliate/content sites, but for most normal sites the same boring stuff still does most of the work: pages that actually answer the search, clean structure, internal links, fast site, real topical coverage, and links/mentions that don’t look forced. The overcomplication comes from chasing every update before fixing the obvious stuff. A lot of sites don’t need 20 tools and some crazy AI workflow, they need better pages, better intent matching, and less garbage content.

So yeah, SEO is more layered now, but the foundation is still pretty simple. Most people just skip it because it’s not exciting.

People make it more complicated than it is. Most local businesses can rank very easily with just some basics

the basic still work. Visibility usually gets better with user benefit and quality experience. while new trends are crucial it may be easy to lose sight of the main idea by trying to follow all of them.
 
Yes, I think many people are making seo more complicated than it needs to be. The fundamentals of still work. Good content, proper optimization, and authority building. New tools can help, but they can't replace the basics.

the only difference is in the allowace of errors and not SEO basics. the problem before was that the site could rank even if the page were poorly structured. what has changed now is that the basics still work but google allow more leeway.
 
I think SEO has become more competitive, not necessarily more complicated. Many people overcomplicate it chasing every new tactic, while sites with useful content, solid topic relevance, and a good user experience continue to rank. The fundamentals still do most of the heavy lifting.
 
SEO is more complicated AI, intent, UX factors but the foundation has remained unchanged high-quality content, strong technical aspects, and backlinks will always work best. It’s easy to complicate SEO by focusing too much on trying new tools rather than addressing basic issues such as user intent and website architecture
 
Curious though — what niche are you seeing these simple sites rank in? Local SEO, affiliate, or informational content? The answer can make a big difference.
 
It's not that complicated really. You don't really chase backlinks. you can look at competitor pages, Google autocomplete, and the "People also ask" section. Pull out long tail keywords from there, write posts that directly answer those questions. Keep the structure clean, link related posts together, and traffic comes.
 
It’s a bit of both I mean. SEO is getting more competitive yes, but a lot of people tend to make it overly complex, with extra steps and needless chasing. In practice, websites that keep helpful content in the foreground, have sound technical SEO, do strong internal linking, and earn relevant backlinks still do well. The basics did not change, you can almost rely on it, steady execution usually wins over chasing each new SEO fad.
 
People are overcomplicating and overthinking. I'm running a few local SEO services, and for example, recently I built 5 websites with Claude/Codex and 4 of them are already in the top 10 and getting traffic. I'm using tiered link building with tools I own, and to be honest, ranking and dominating is easier than before thanks to AI. The only issue is that some informational niches are affected by AI overviews, but even then, if we know what untapped issues and keywords exist, we can still dominate them in the overview as well.
 
I believe people are overcomplicating it. In reality nothing much has changed in SEO. There are still the same few pillars: technical, content, links and authority. That is all. However the approach to getting good links has changed. Now it is about relevant, niche specific links, rather than getting links from any resource just to have more, like it used to be.
 
SEO is hard if you want to place your business #1 from day one. People who are new to SEO or got skills issues they are making it overcomplicating. SEO is a simple thing; you maintain it properly and you’ll find it in the growth section.
