YouTube Shorts Killing Long Videos?

I think Shorts getting more views does not mean long videos stop working. Shorts and long videos attract different people. If your long videos solve a problem and keep people watching, they can still do well.

Not necessarily. Shorts and long-form often attract different audiences. Shorts can boost reach, but converting viewers into long-form watchers is the real challenge. Many creators use Shorts successfully as a top-of-funnel strategy.

I've seen a lot of creators talk about this. From what I've noticed, Shorts don't necessarily hurt long-form videos, but they often attract a different type of viewer. Someone who watches a 20-second Short isn't always interested in a 10-minute video.

That said, Shorts can still be great for growth if they're related to your main content and give people a reason to check out your longer videos. The biggest mistake is treating them as two completely different channels.

The audience is not fully different, short clips of long movies make more views from people who have seen the movie to the end. Short is fast and gets a message across quickly, all of the people wants something quick, It's like saying fast food took over slow food.

you can use that to your advantage, link the long videos to the most interesting part of your short. Or post multiple shorts linking back to the long video, you will get views that way

I think the current trend is shifting toward short-form videos and live streaming. Long-form videos are finding it much harder to grow and attract audiences than they did in the past.

@TopOneYouTube is spot on about the algorithmic drag. i ran a test last year on a client channel pushing shorts hard, and the average view duration on our 10-minute videos dropped by almost half within six weeks. the subs you get from shorts just don't click long form, and when they do, they leave instantly which kills your reach. honestly if you want to leverage shorts without ruining your main channel's authority, it's better to run them on a separate burner channel and redirect the traffic through pinned links. keeping them on the same channel is just asking to mess up your data.

It is a straight-up audience mismatch. Shorts viewers rarely convert into long-form fans, and pushing long videos to them just kills your initial retention. The cleanest move is to run a separate channel for your long videos. Keep using Shorts on the main channel as a traffic funnel, and use the Related Video link feature to drive the high-intent viewers over to your long-form channel.

You don't need to split your channels and lose your momentum. The actual fix is aggressive pacing in the first 10 - 20 - 30 seconds of your long videos. Shorts viewers don't hate long content. they just hate slow intros. Edit your long-form hooks with fast cuts and instant payoff to match their viewing habits, which saves your retention rate from tanking

You wouldn't believe this! Many content creators face a similar situation: while short videos are booming, longer videos are showing signs of stagnation or declining views. This phenomenon is called "cannibalization" between formats. Below are the main reasons and the truth behind how short videos affect the long-term growth of a channel.

I wonder if the issue is shorts hurting long videos or just attracting a different type of audience

I have noticed many creators mention the same thing but often Shorts and long videos attract different audiences Success usually comes from using Shorts to funnel interested viewers toward longer content rather than expecting both formats to perform the same way

make a channel intended for shorts or long, not both. It's not recommended to use both specially for a small channel.
