flipped a handful over the years, mostly stuff i grabbed cheap on expired drops. the money is real but its way more about patience than picking clever names. i held a couple for like 3 years before anyone bit, and a few i just renewed forever and never sold.

what actually moved for me was domains that already had some backlink history or matched a niche keyword people search with buying intent. brandables sell too but the market is flooded so you need volume and a marketplace presence.

honestly the biggest mistake i made early was overpaying at auction thinking i found gold. you make money on the buy not the sale. set a hard max and walk away, theres always another drop tomorrow.

one thing nobody mentions, taxes and fees eat into it more than you'd think, and a lot of the "sold for $X" screenshots floating around are gross not net. just keep expectations realistic, its a slow grind not a quick flip for most people.

waiting for inbound offers is a graveyard unless you have a portfolio of thousands. most of my quick flips came from finding local businesses with terrible domains... like some contractor using a crappy .net or a super long name. i hand reg the better .com version for ten bucks, scrape their contact info, and send a polite cold email. usually can flip them for $300 to $500 within a week. it takes actual outbound hustle but you aren't sitting around waiting years for a buyer.

I've done both ways over the years. The outbound method @SMM Junction mentioned is definitely the fastest way to make a quick buck, but man, cold emailing local business owners gets tiring. A lot of them just don't get the value and think you're trying to scam them. Personally had better luck grabbing expired domains that still get some residual type-in traffic and putting a basic "for sale" landing page on them. If a buyer sees actual traffic stats, they pay way more. It takes some waiting like @The WP Nerd said but you aren't chasing people down.
