Hello, I have a few questions about advertorials and promotional articles.

Here’s the situation: I run a media outlet—a legitimate, well-established one with decent traffic, though nothing extraordinary.

I’m thinking about increasing my revenue. Right now, I’m running a crowdfunding campaign, and it’s going well. However, it’s not enough to pay someone a salary (and yes, a real employment contract—no, unfortunately I’m not allowed to hire freelancers).

So, no mystery here: I need to find some cash.

Clarification on what an advertorial is: it is a press article that, on the surface, promotes the merits of a product or a company.
The traditional media produces a lot of them.

My questions are as follows:

- How do I calculate the price to charge an entity that wants to place an advertorial on my site? Or a sponsored article?

- How do I find advertisers, given that there are plenty of niches I simply can’t take on?

I’m not asking for ready-made solutions, just a few ideas to think about :)

Thanks

Figure out your website's traffic, engagement, and authority, then charge accordingly, and as for advertisers, maybe try looking for those with products or services that don't make you want to shower

Okay, that's very kind of you, but that's exactly the point: what I need is a spreadsheet, and as for advertisers, yeah, that seems pretty obvious to me :D

The amount to charge is tough to figure out but if I were you, I would contact other media outlets like yours and pose as an advertisers to see how much they charge. As to how to get advertisers, it could be as simple as a banner, text or emails; it honestly depends on what you are running

That's actually pretty smart :D Thanks!

So, an advertorial isn't what you're talking about.

It’s a press article that pretends to be journalistic content but is actually disguised advertising.

It’s a bit hidden, not out in the open. We dress it up with fancy terms. What you’re talking about is real, open advertising, presented as such.

Advertorials (in my language, the term really captures the essence; in English, it doesn’t quite work as well) are sort of the exclusive domain of newspapers, because you dress it up by saying, “Hey, look, we’re a real newsroom with real journalists.”

In fact, one of the reasons there was a real war in my country against bloggers and real independent journalists is that the old guard in the press didn’t want to lose the advertising market to them (we still managed to screw them over pretty good).

Honestly, from an ethical standpoint, it pisses me off; that wasn’t the idea I had when I started my newspaper, but since the regulatory bodies are giving me a hard time to hire people with employment contracts, salaries, and social security contributions, I’m forced to compromise my ethics, because money doesn’t grow on trees.

Sorry for the whining—right now, I’m feeling a little lonely and a bit down.

What we ask the publisher to share with us:
1. For how long the sponsored article will be pinned to the top of the homepage?
2. How many pageviews on average the sponsored articles are generating? --> What is average CTR of the article? --> This is how I get an estimated number of link clicks, then I work with average CR and AOV on our end to get the expected sales.
3. As I forecast the sales, I can easily calculate the price that I can to the publisher in order to reach the required ROAS target.

This is purely performance-driven approach. There are loads of brands who don't think of this approach and are OK with paying significantly higher amounts. But business is a war and a war is a game of utilizing existing resources. Our competition simply bleeds while we grow:)

Hi,
thank you for your detailed response :)
In the meantime, I’ve done some research on my own, run some rough calculations, and I can easily charge €500 per sponsored post given my niche and by being very selective.

My administrative situation still hasn’t changed; the agency responsible for reviewing applications is way behind schedule and isn’t getting much work done.
