you can check it from ahref, you can find old domains from porkbun, and there are other sites too for domain audit, but ahref and semrush is enough.

Just google buy expired domains there are a lot of providers selling them

@VikramAditya007 if you want free, expireddomains.net is the best starting point for finding them. but for history you absolutely need to check wayback machine (archive.org) before buying anything. i bought a domain last year that looked amazing on paper but when i checked the archive history it was redirecting to some weird pharma site for two years... totally ruined it. for backlinks you can use the free version of ahrefs backlink checker to get a quick look, but yeah, you kinda get what you pay for with free tools.

@VikramAditya007 definitely check if the domain is still indexed in google using site:domain.com before you buy anything. i always do this first because if it is completely deindexed, there is a high chance it got hit by a penalty. @SMM Junction is right about archive.org being essential... you have to look at what was actually on the site. another free thing you can do is check the anchor text on the free version of ahrefs. if you see random foreign anchors or casino keywords, just skip it. saved myself a lot of cash doing these quick manual checks before even thinking about buying.

Free tools are ok for the first filter, but dont trust RD numbers alone. I usually check expireddomains.net, then archive.org, then Ahrefs free/Moz free just to see anchors and referring domains, but the real check is opening some of those backlink pages manually... lots of “strong” expired domains are just profile spam or auto-generated junk. Also check if it had multiple drops on whois history, because domains that changed hands 5 times and got rebuilt/redirected a lot usually perform like trash. If it passes all that, then maybe worth running through a paid tool before buying.

One thing nobody mentioned... when you pull the backlinks check the dates. Lot of these domains had decent links years ago but everything is dead now or the linking pages got cleaned out. A profile that looks strong in ahrefs free can be 80% gone if you actually click through. Also archive.org sometimes blocks you from seeing certain snapshots if the new owner added a robots.txt, so if the history looks suspiciously empty thats usually a red flag on its own. expireddomains.net + manual checking is the way, just dont rush it.
