Do mixed backlinks still work in 2026?

Low quality backlinks like spam comments and PBNs are risky and can hurt rankings.
If that were true we'd just all be firing up our GSAs and spamming loads of whatever links come from it's dwindling engines nowadays to our competitors and watch these 'hurt rankings' manifest. Reality is different. But these sorts of things work best for tiering or parasites anyway.

In 2026 the links that really help rankings are mostly niche aligned guest posts, editorial mentions, and digital PR shoutouts. Low quality comment or profile links have little to no effect, and PBN networks are risky. A safer approach is to put more weight on high quality contextual backlinks instead of chasing raw numbers or a spam mix.

mixed link profiles still seem more natural than relying on one type alone. that said quality matters a lot more now so i would focus on stronger links first and treat lower tier links as supporting signals rather than the main strategy.

In 2026, what kinds of backlinks (e.g., guest posts, comment links, profile links, PBNs) will help get ranking results?
Will it still be okay to use some low-quality comment/profile backlinks with just high-quality guest and editorial backlinks, or is it safe to only rely on high-quality backlinks?
How would you create a balanced backlink strategy?
Comment backlinks and profile links usually have very low SEO value, most of the time google ignore them or they do not give any real ranking boost.

My strategies 80 to 90% relevant contextual link 10 to 20% diversity links.
