Hey, everyone.
When a page drops from position 2 to page 5, it's not great for anybody, but we all know how stressful it is to see a page dropping from its top rank. Most of the time, if you lose a top 5 ranking page, you make unnecessary changes and it only makes it worse.
Use this quick checklist I made from my personal experiences to help you get back your search ranking.
Begin with Google Search Console: Before anything else, check GSC to see if there were any sudden crawl errors or if there were any manual actions taken on your page.
Examine the New Top 5: Check which pages are now ranking and if the search intent has changed. For example, has Google decided that for this keyword, they're prioritizing service pages over informational guides?
Conduct a Drop Impact Audit: Did you change the URL, the content, or the internal links before the drop? If you did something and broke your page, undo whatever you did.
Wait it Out: If you, along with the major competitors you check, dropped from the rankings, it's probably an update and a change in the algorithms that Google is giving you time to adjust to.
Don't immediately start disavowing links. The ranking will come back.
What's the first thing you check when you lose site rankings? Drop some comments.
