I think it usually comes down to culture and intent. Some communities are built around sharing tools, recommendations, and industry knowledge, so mentioning a product isn't automatically viewed as spam. Others have spent years fighting low quality self promotion and have become extremely skeptical of anything that looks like marketing.

The biggest difference I've noticed is that Reddit users tend to tolerate marketers who contribute value before asking for anything. If someone consistently helps people, answers questions, and participates in discussions, an occasional mention of their product is often accepted. If every comment leads back to a website or service, the community usually spots it pretty quickly.

For businesses, the best approach seems to be acting like a community member first and a marketer second. The companies that do well on Reddit often earn trust over time rather than trying to generate immediate traffic from every interaction.

Honestly @mayhemood is right about the sub culture, but there is another huge factor people overlook... mod monopoly. I tried doing the whole value first thing in a software niche last year, spent weeks writing genuine guides, and still got nuked. Turns out one of the active mods owned a SaaS that competed with us. If the mods are using the subreddit as their own personal funnel, you will get banned no matter how helpful you are. Before you even try to engage, look at who the mods are and what they pin. If they are pushing their own projects, just move on because you wont win that battle.

I think people overestimate the “just add value first” advice on Reddit. It works only when the community is actually neutral.

Some subreddits are run almost like private clubs. If the mods already have their favorite tools, sponsors, friends, or even competing projects, your helpful comments can still get removed.

So before posting, I would look less at the written rules and more at the actual behavior. Who is allowed to mention products? Which links stay up? What brands are constantly recommended? Are normal users allowed to name alternatives, or only the same few names?

Reddit can be great for marketing, but you have to read the power structure first. Otherwise you can waste weeks being “valuable” in a place that was never open to you anyway.

Usually 1 or the 2......... UNLESS you're talking about groups that have 'gatekeepers' that tkae money quietly

IMO ,if you dont contribute the sub and not a valuable contributor or adding some insight in comments just if you there to promote i dont think any community will accept you expect spam communities ! I have seen guys who just honestly mention this is my website/product and please feel free to leave your feedback i have seen mods pinned the posts and helped him to get some leads
