Thousand of affiliate sites get traffic but only a small percentage generate meaningful revenue what factors do you believe separate highly profitable affiliate site from average projects struggling to monetize effectively?

Create multiple affiliate sites. Do you remember meathead , he advised to create 1 affiliate site every day. And no he did not say use ai this was before ai boom.
The more the sites more the clicks and more the chances of sales.
It's a numbers game.

for me, it's all bout targeting the right audience. A site with less traffic but strong buyer intent will usually earn more than a site with lots of untargeted visitors

Beyond traffic targeting, the network/offer selection itself matters more than people give it credit for. A lot of average sites stick with whatever network approved them first instead of testing a few and comparing actual EPC across networks for the same vertical — payout structures and approval bars vary enough that the 'best' network changes depending on your niche and traffic source.

Profitable sites also tend to diversify monetization instead of relying on one affiliate program — mixing in a CPM/display layer for non-converting traffic so nothing goes to waste. The sites stuck at average revenue are usually monetizing only the visitors who convert and leaving the rest on the table
