Google doesn’t care about DR.
It cares about:

Relevance
Context
Link placement
Site quality
Trust signals

I’ve seen this many times:

20 “DR 50+” links → no movement
2 strong niche-relevant links → rankings jump

Most people aren’t doing SEO.
They’re just decorating reports.

You are right, DR is just a tool metric, not something Google actually uses. What really moves thing is whether the link actually fits the topic and appears in a natural, trusted context. I have also seen a few well placed, niche relevant links do more than a pile of high DR ones that don't really belong.

you are right. A lot of people chase DR metrics instead of asking whether the link actually makes sense for the niche. One relevant mention from a trusted site in your space can outperform dozens of random “high DR” placements.

You hit the nail on the head. DR is just a vanity metric for reporting Google looks at the actual authority and relevance behind the link. Real topical authority comes from sites that are actually visited by your target audience, not from empty shells with inflated scores. Quality always beats quantity in the current landscape.

Google is stupid :)

DR is a correlation metric, not a causal ranking factor - that's the real point. Google ranks based on its own link graph, relevance signals, and quality assessments. Ahrefs DR is just a proxy that correlates with those signals. You can absolutely outrank high DR sites with a lower DR if your topical relevance, on-page quality, and actual backlink quality is better. The mistake is chasing DR as if it's a direct input into Google's algorithm. It's not.

A lot of people confuse SEO metrics with actual ranking impact, nice looking reports don’t always mean stronger rankings

Honestly relevance and context seem far more important now than chasing DR numbers alone

100% agree with @SyedHabib-SEOExpert — DR is an Ahrefs metric, not a Google metric, and the conflation between the two has caused enormous confusion in this industry. I've seen sites with DR 8 outrank DR 60+ competitors consistently because the lower DR site had genuine topical relevance and real user engagement signals. The harder truth @tessvandijk touched on is this: proxy metrics like DR exist because clients want something simple and quantifiable on a report. Real SEO signals — click-through rate, dwell time, brand searches, entity recognition — are much harder to put in a slide deck. The agencies selling "DR40+ links" packages aren't necessarily wrong that strong links help, but they're packaging it in a way that obscures what's actually working. For anyone building a long-term asset: track brand searches, organic CTR, and SERP feature wins. That's what Google actually cares about.

DR is useful as a quick filter, but it shouldn’t be the reason you buy a link.

I’d check relevance, traffic pattern, outbound links, index quality, and where the link sits on the page. If all that looks clean, then DR is just an extra number.

bro you are spot on dr is just a third party metric made by ahrefs that can be easily gamed with spam redirects google looks for actual niche relevance contextual traffic and real trust signals a single link from a live site in your exact niche beats twenty high dr general sites every time

Google doesn't bother about 3rd party metrics. We do.

yeah google doesn't care about dr it can be easily manipulated. the real power of a backlink comes from niche relevance and actual traffic.

I agree with the overall point. DR is useful as a rough metric but sometimes people treat it as if Google uses it directly. Some of the best ranking improvements I've seen came from links that weren't particularly impressive on paper but were highly relevant and made sense in context. A lot of SEO reports look great because they're full of metrics. Rankings usually care more about whether those links actually help establish authority in the topic you're trying to rank for.

DR is an Ahrefs metric not a Google metric. What I actually check is whether the site is still getting organic traffic after the last core update. A DR 35 site that survived two updates beats a DR 60 site that lost 70% of its traffic every single time. The number stayed the same, the trust didn't.

I feel you are partially correct. Google does not use DR directly since it's one of the metrics used by Ahrefs. However, this doesn't mean that DR has no meaning at all. In most cases, a site with high DR is always more likely to contain strong backlinks and authority. The problem comes when someone makes it the ultimate metric.

A site with DR of 70 and which is completely irrelevant in relation to your niche could even be less beneficial compared to a website with DR of 30 but has a lot of relevance. Nonetheless, ignoring DR entirely could be misleading as well. DR is still a good filter but not a ranking factor.
